Low-carbon sector: A green energy partnership between Scottish and Southern Energy and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries could create 1,000 new jobs, says the Daily Record. The companies are linking up to develop low-carbon energy opportunities such as offshore wind farms and power for electric cars. It is estimated 1,000 posts will be created by 2015, starting with 100 highly-skilled jobs at SSE's engineering centre at Strathclyde University in Glasgow.
Manufacturing: Steel and metal manufacturer Corus is taking on 154 new staff in south Yorkshire and reinstating its apprentice and graduate programmes, according to The Star. This recruitment drive marks the first intake of trainees to the Speciality Steels division since the recession started. Workers will be taken on as agency employees initially but if business continues to improve, staff will be offered permanent contracts.
Engineering: A new renewable energy park in York is to create dozens of jobs for electricians and green energy engineers. The construction stage of Selby Renewable Energy Park will create 80 jobs, with 40 further positions for electricians and engineers when the plant is up and running.
Education: Due to expansion, training agency Learndirect is set to employ 250 extra staff at its Leicester offices, reports the Leicestershire Mercury. The company needs new customer service advisers, team leaders and learning support practitioners to address a government push to improve skills.
Retail: Tesco is to give long-term unemployed candidates first dibs on the 500 new jobs at a new store in Accrington, Lancashire. According to the Manchester Evening News, the council and the supermarket have signed a Regeneration Partnership, giving priority interviews to those jobless for over six months.
Customer service: Business directory Yell is creating 60 new jobs for telesales consultants at its Belfast office. The company told Recruiter it wants motivated and enthusiastic recruits who can offer marketing advice to small businesses.
