SSE Airtricity become dual League of Ireland sponsors

SSE Airtricity have extended their sponsorship of the League of Ireland for another two years.

And the energy suppliers have also been named as the new title sponsors of the Women’s National League.

It is understood that prize money for the men’s Premier and First Divisions will remain the same as last season.

SSE Airtricity's deal had expired at the end of last season and it was initially unclear if they would commit for a 12th season.

FAI chief Jonathan Hill said in a statement: “The double sponsorship announcement today is testament to the future direction of our domestic game.

“It is a significant boost for our League football infrastructure.”

Hill continued: “SSE Airtricity’s commitment to Women’s football will come as no surprise to those who know how quickly our Women’s game is growing.”

The FAI has confirmed March 19 as the scheduled start date for the men’s Premier Division season, with the First Division and WNL campaigns underway on March 26.

But players around the league are still awaiting a breakdown of the FAI’s return to training protocols and Covid-19 testing measures.

It is believed that FAI Cup winners Dundalk began testing last Friday ahead of pre-season training starting in the weeks ahead.
