Sreeja Akula ruled out of UTT due to injury

NEW DELHI: Due to a stress fracture, Indian table tennis player Sreeja Akula will not compete in the upcoming season of Ultimate Table Tennis.

Akula, rated 22nd, is now the top ranked player in the nation. She made history with world No. 25 Manika Batra, becoming the first Indian players to advance past the round of 16 in individual events at the Olympics in Paris.

The 26-year-old Akula, a two-time national champion, stated in a statement posted on Monday that she will require a six-week rest period before playing for the Jaipur Patriots, as per PTI.

"I am sorry to share that I have been diagnosed with a stress fracture and on my doctor's advice, I will need to rest for six weeks, which unfortunately means (that) I will not be able to participate in the UTT," she said.

From August 22 to September 7, Chennai will host the next UTT edition.
