Squid Game’s O Yeong-su wins his first Golden Globe aged 77 as co-stars celebrate

Squid Game actor O Yeong-su won his first Golden Globe award last night for his performance in the hit South Korean drama on Netflix.

The 77-year-old actor took home the Best Supporting Actor gong for his portrayal of Oh II-nam, also known as The Host or Player 001.

O Yeong-su became the first Korean actor to win a Golden Globe, after he was up against Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass for The Morning Show, Kieran Culkin for Succession and Brett Goldstein for Ted Lasso.

O Yeong-su’s history-making triumph was announced at a small and muted ceremony in Los Angeles, which was not televised and had no red carpet.

A number of O Yeong-su’s Squid Game cast members took to social media to congratulate him on the win.

Lee Jung-jae, who played the lead character Seong Gi‑Hun, wrote: “Mr Il-nam, congratulations. Every scene with my teacher was an honour.”

Jung-jae was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama, category but lost to Succession star Jeremy Strong.

Kim Joo-ryeong, who played the calculating and devious Han Mi-neyo in the show, wrote: “Heartiest congratulations to you, sir. Stay healthy always.”

Meanwhile, Heo Sung-tae, who played antagonist Jang Deok-su, shared a picture of Oh Yeong-su, writing: “I look up to you.”

Squid Game has become Netflix's most watched series in 94 countries since it was dropped on the streaming platform in September.

The streaming giant reported that 142 million households tuned in to watch the dystopian South Korean drama.

The show has now been officially renewed by Netflix for a second season - as well as a possible third.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk talked around this idea, but confirmed in November that t new episodes are coming.

He told Korean broadcaster KBS: “I'm in talks with Netflix over season two as well as season three. We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”

He also told The AP: “There's been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season.

“It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. But I do think it's too early to say when and how that's going to happen.

“So I will promise you this…Gi-Hun will come back, and he will do something for the world.”
