Spyro: A Realm Beyond was announced during the XBOX Games Showcase, giving Spyro his first new original mainline adventure in almost two decades. The game launches in Spring 2027 and is being developed by Toys for Bob, the studio that previously handled Spyro Reignited Trilogy.
The game is coming to XBOX Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and PS5. It will also launch on Game Pass and support XBOX Play Anywhere across console and PC.
The reveal focused on a new world, a redesigned Spyro, and one major gameplay change: full dragon flight. Unlike the original games, where Spyro mostly glided and only flew in specific stages, A Realm Beyond lets players take flight as part of his core moveset.
Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan said the team wanted to keep Spyro recognizable while evolving him for a new game. The redesign keeps the thread from the original games and Reignited Trilogy, but gives Spyro a larger wingspan to support the new flight system.
Yan said the team wanted to collapse Spyro’s old glide and limited flight-stage abilities into one core mechanic, giving players more control over how they move through the world.
Tom Kenny is also returning as the voice of Spyro. Kenny voiced the character in Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, and Spyro Reignited Trilogy, so his return keeps the new game close to the version many fans grew up with.
The story also appears to be pushing Spyro into slightly heavier territory without dropping the series’ tone. The announcement trailer introduced a new antagonist, and Yan said the threat will challenge Spyro’s abilities and push him into new emotional territory.
Toys for Bob, the developers of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, became independent in 2024 after years under Activision. However, they did such a great job with the Reignited trilogy that it’s unsurprising that Activision and XBOX wanted them to be the studio that handles the revival of such an iconic character.
