Spurs' unique role in Manchester City's stunning domestic treble success this season revealed

Manchester City made history this season.

Saturday's 6-0 thumping of Watford in the FA Cup final added to the Carabao Cup as well as the Premier League title, ensuring Pep Guardiola's side became the first English men's side to win a domestic treble.

However, the Champions League continues to allude them and they crashed out of the competition at the quarter-final stage in dramatic fashion on away goals at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Jurgen Klopp addresses his Champions League final record and issues strong warning to Spurs

With that said, Kevin De Bruyne - a scorer at Wembley - insists the squad can have no complaints about not winning an unprecedented quadruple and explained how losing to Spurs inspired them to finish the season strongly.

"No, not at all," De Bruyne responded when asked if he was annoyed at missing out on Champions League glory. "I think if everyone could take our situation, they would do it without blinking. You can't really think about 'what if' or what should happen.

"We lost in the Champions League, you take it on the chin and go further. The response we did afterwards is the way you should react. By winning the title and winning the FA Cup.

"I don't think in the start of the year you have the goal of winning three titles.

"You set up to be the best you can and in the end you have to reflect on what's going well and what's not.

"This year we can reflect on that we won three titles and got to the quarter finals of the Champions League and that's an incredible feat in itself."

Not only did Spurs knockout the Premier League champions, but the Dutch champions too - once again by virtue of the away goals rule - and will face Liverpool in the final at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium next month.
