Spurs star Son Heung-min says South Korea were lucky to avoid injury against North Korea

Spurs star Son Heung-min has spoken of the rough treatment his South Korean teammates received in their World Cup qualifier against neighbours North Korea.

It was the first competitive meeting between the two sides in Pyongyang, and was shrouded in secrecy with very few details emerging from the match.

The Kim Il Sung Stadium was empty, with no media presence inside barring a small number of South Korean officials and no North Korean fans - with South Korean fans unable to travel for the game.

The South Korean team were unable to talk about the match until their return to Seoul on Thursday, and the Spurs attacker stated that his side were lucky to come away from the game unscathed following some tough tackling from their opponents.

"The opponents were very rough, and there were moments when very abusive language was exchanged," Son told Associated Press .

"It was hard to concentrate on the match because you were thinking about avoiding injury first.

"It's an accomplishment that we returned from a game like that without injury."

With no media present at the game, the only available highlights were provided by North Korea in a DVD to South Korean officials.

However, a planned broadcast of the game in South Korea was cancelled because of the low quality of the video.
