Spurs star Serge Aurier apologises for red card against Southampton

Tottenham picked up a much-needed three points on Saturday.

But they had to do it the hard way.

After losing to Leicester City last weekend and then being dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Colchester United in midweek, three points were just what Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs ordered.

Tanguy Ndombele opened the scoring midway through the first half, but things started to unravel soon after that.

Serge Aurier saw red for two yellow cards in quick succession, before Hugo Lloris dropped a huge clanger, dallying on the ball in his own six-yard box, allowing Danny Ings the simplest of tap-ins.

Thankfully for Tottenham, a quick counter-attack ended with Harry Kane sweeping the ball home for a 2-1 lead at half-time, and they held on after the break to secure the points.

Aurier's red card could have led to more strife for Pochettino and the club, but it was a strong performance in the face of adversity, which, given the negativity around the club of late, was a perfect response.

Mauricio Pochettino insists Tottenham are 'united'

Ivorian full-back Aurier has apologised for the dismissal.

Speaking on his official Instagram page, Aurier said: "Sorry for giving up the team at an important moment but happy with the victory and the work of the guys thanks for this important victory at home on Tuesday for another fight."

Tottenham take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night and will certainly need all 11 players on the pitch for that huge clash.
