Spurs power rankings: Mauricio Pochettino's wildcard in defence as Jan Vertonghen falls

Spurs could have a brand new centre-back pairing next summer with a couple of key players in line to depart.

Forming a strong partnership ever since first linking up back in 2015, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen's time at the club appears to be coming to an end with their contracts set to expire at the end of the season.

That will see Davinson Sanchez step up and feature on a regular basis, with youngster Japhet Tanganga a possibility to partner him after an impressive pre-season from the youngster.

As we are now two months into the new season we have decided to take a look at how the centre-backs have fared so far this term.

The power rankings as they stand are below in ascending order.

Spurs power rankings: Centre-backs

Japhet Tanganga

Age: 20

The youngster looks to have a bright future in N17 after impressing for the team in pre-season with some strong displays.

Wenger: Pochettino needs to show he can give more to Tottenham

He has trained with the first team on a regular basis this season and he made his senior debut against Colchester United in the Carabao Cup.

As Alderweireld and Vertonghen are on course to leave the club on free transfers next summer, Tanganga could be a big part of Pochettino's plans going forward.

Power ranking: 6th - His chance could come in the coming weeks if Spurs' issues continue after the international break.

Eric Dier

Age: 25

Dier really has had a year to forget with a combination of injury and illness limiting his time on the pitch in 2019.

Starting at centre-back in the recent cup defeat against Colchester, the versatile player started in midfield at Brighton before moving back into defence as Spurs went with three at the back in the second half.

Defence hasn't been Spurs' strong point this term and chances may come his way in the future.

Power ranking: 5th - Behind a number of players in both defence and midfield.

Juan Foyth

Age: 21

The defender played for the first time on Wednesday evening as he got 90 minutes under his belt in Argentina's 2-2 draw against Germany.

Foyth lined up at right-back and that's where we might see him play on a regular basis this term.

He's still a centre-back first and foremost despite switching across to full-back for his country, so his versatility could be key for Tottenham between now and the end of the season.

Power ranking: 4th - May be used at right-back this season after impressing there for Argentina.

Davinson Sanchez

Age: 23

The Colombian has not enjoyed the best of starts to the season for Spurs.

Aston Villa capitalised on the space between the centre-back and Danny Rose on the opening day a number of times, while he has also struggled at right-back when moved across for the games against Arsenal and Olympiacos.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen's drop in form may see him return to the team after the international break.

Power ranking: 3rd - Started the season in defence but now back on the bench.

Jan Vertonghen

Age: 32

A key figure for Spurs ever since his move from Ajax back in 2012, eyebrows were raised on the opening day of the season when he was left out of the squad completely.

Named on the bench for the following games against Man City and Newcastle United, it wasn't until the start of September when he was back on the pitch as he started in the north London derby.

Vertonghen has not been at his best this term but he has won his place back from Sanchez.

Power ranking: 2nd - Now back alongside Alderweireld after failing to feature in the opening three games.

Toby Alderweireld

Age: 30

The only centre-back to start in all eight Premier League games for the Lilywhites so far this season.

Looking destined to leave in the summer due to the release clause in his contract, the Belgian international remained in north London with not one club making a move for him.

Spurs are going to have to plan for life without him as he's on course to leave for nothing unless his current contract situation changes.

Not his best start to the campaign but he's now quite clearly the main centre-back in N17.

Power ranking: 1st - Pochettino's first-choice at the back after playing regularly so far this campaign.
