Spurs news: Lo Celso transfer latest, Pep Guardiola's comments on Tottenham, double injury blow

Pre-season is now over for Tottenham and attention now turns to the Premier League opener against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Spurs finished their pre-season preparations with a 1-1 draw with Inter Milan at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their final International Champions Cup clash of the summer.

And although the Serie A side won the contest on penalties, it has still been a largely positive pre-season for Mauricio Pochettino's side, after winning the Audi Cup.

But ahead of the opening game against Villa, Pochettino has delivered some bad news for the Lilywhites fans.

Below, we take a look at the latest Spurs news.

Giovani Lo Celso latest

It has been one of the transfer sagas of the summer, but could it finally be coming to an end?

Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham all summer, although the Lilywhites were seemingly dealt a blow when the Argentine was named in his club's squad for a pre-season tour of Morocco.

But the Daily Record reported last night (Sunday) that a deal has been agreed between the two clubs, with the Argentina international set to cost an initial €52million, with a further €8million in performance-related add-ons.

That got some Spurs fans talking, and hoping that an end to the saga is now in sight, ahead of Thursday's transfer deadline.

Dele Alli injury blow

He was not involved against Inter Milan, and Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Dele Alli is set to miss the start of the new season.

Alli was a notable absentee from Spurs' squad to face Inter Milan in the final pre-season friendly of the summer, with the England international missing out with a hamstring issue.

And speaking after the game, Pochettino confirmed that Alli was likely to be out for a couple of weeks.

"I don’t know if the club communicate the time but I don’t believe he's going to be ready for the start of the season," he said, speaking in his post-match press conference.

"It's the same area. Yes, of course we are worried. He's still so young. Just 23-years-old and many, many hamstring problems in the last few years. It's to pay attention to what is going on in his body, but we are here to try to help him. Think minor injury. Only a few weeks before he can be available again and be with the group."

Juan Foyth injury

Dele Alli is not the only player on the injury list for Spurs ahead of the new season.

Defender Juan Foyth was also missing as Spurs faced Inter, with the Argentinian international missing out with an ankle problem.

He is suspended for the first two games of the season, but Pochettino has confirmed that he is likely to miss several weeks at the start of the season through injury.

"With Juan I think the medical staff are going to update in the next few days," Pochettino said.

"I cannot say more because I don't know exactly how much time. For sure it's a tough injury and for sure it is many weeks he is going to be out. We hope he can recover as soon as possible."

Pep Guardiola's comments on Spurs

They may have finished 27 points above Tottenham last season, but Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested that it will be closer than that this season.

City and Liverpool were some distance ahead of the chasing pack in the Premier League in 2018/19, with Chelsea in third finishing 26 points behind Guardiola's men, and 25 behind the Reds.

But speaking after City defeated Liverpool in a penalty shootout in the Community Shield yesterday (Sunday), Guardiola said he expects there to be added competition from the duo's top six rivals this season.

“I would say that there are many, [Manchester] United will be back, Arsenal have bought good players, Tottenham have had a good pre-season and Chelsea of course are always there," he told BT Sport.

"I don't know what is going to happen, I will just try to prepare the team and try to win, and we will see what happens."
