Spurs news: Danny Rose to Newcastle latest, Steven Bergwijn claim, Jose Mourinho's key decisions

Tottenham Hotspur have had a busy week so far as the January transfer window draws towards a close.

Spurs have completed the signing of Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven, while the Lilywhites have also exercised the option to turn Giovani Lo Celso's loan deal into a permanent move.

There have also been exits, with the protracted transfer saga over Christian Eriksen finally coming to an end as he made the move to Inter Milan, while Kyle Walker-Peters has joined Southampton on loan until the end of the season.

Tottenham continue to be linked with a number of players though ahead of the deadline, with a striker still a priority for Jose Mourinho.

Spurs are now favourites to complete a shock move to sign Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, with AC Milan's Polish international Krzysztof Piatek now set to join Hertha Berlin, having been linked with both Tottenham and the Blues.

But there are other possible incomings and outgoings in north London, according to reports.

Below, we take a look at the latest Spurs news.

Danny Rose to Newcastle latest

Newcastle United have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Tottenham left-back Danny Rose ahead of the transfer deadline on Friday, reports the Newcastle Chronicle.

Rose has found his opportunities limited at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this term, although he said last November that he would stay at Tottenham until his contract runs out in the summer of 2021.

Bournemouth and Watford have also been linked with the left-back, but it is understood that Newcastle have won the race to sign the England international on loan.

Rose is out of contract in north London next year.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has also spoken positively about Rose, who has not featured in any of Spurs' last four games.

He said: "He's a quality player and a class act, the kid. Whether it's possible, who knows?"

Jose Mourinho's big decisions

There has been some transfer activity in recent days at Spurs, but that has given Jose Mourinho some decisions to make when it comes to his Champions League squad this season.

With Christian Eriksen leaving to join Inter Milan, a space has opened up in Tottenham's Champions League squad, which has has proved problematic in the past for Spurs due to the high number of foreign players already at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But the January arrivals of Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn, as well as the potential signing of a new striker, means that Mourinho is going to have some decisions to make come the start of February.

Hugo Lloris is likely to go straight back into the squad, having been deregistered from the squad following his injury in October.

However, two players may unfortunately have to miss out on the squad for the knockout phase to make way for new faces to be added to the squad.

Big Steven Bergwijn claim

Tottenham completed their move for Steven Bergwijn yesterday, with the Dutchman joining from PSV Eindhoven.

The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a deal until the summer of 2025, after Tottenham agreed a fee that will total around £27million with add-ons with PSV Eindhoven.

And his countryman Rafael van der Vaart – who scored 28 goals in two years at Tottenham – has backed the forward to succeed in north London.

Posting on social media, van der Vaart said: “I believe that Bergwijn will certainly be a great signing for Spurs.

“Obviously he will have to adjust to the PL (Premier League) pace and ambiance but his speed, technique and strength will certainly add something to the Spurs game. Good luck to Stevie and my Spurs.”
