Spurs make Danny Ings transfer decision that could see previous contract promise broken

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly expressed their interest in Southampton striker Danny Ings after he rejected a new contract with the Saints.

The former Liverpool forward’s current deal on the south coast has just under 12 months left to run and could be eligible to leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

He has reportedly been offered fresh terms to stay with Southampton but according to The Athletic, Ings has elected to turn down the deal due to the desire to test himself at a higher level.

That has led to speculation that he could be on the move, with Spurs potentially on the hunt for a striker with Harry Kane’s future up in the air and Carlos Vinicius having departed following the expiry of his loan deal.

Now, Fabio Paratici has seemingly made his decision to pursue Ings with Spurs having reportedly expressed an interest in the forward since he was offered a new contract with Southampton, according to The Athletic.

They are not the only Premier League club talked up as potential suitors though with the likes of West Ham United and Aston Villa having also thrown their respective hats into the ring.

Should Spurs elect to make a move for Ings and manage to sign him this summer, it would see him leave the club before the expiry of his contract - something that Southampton CEO Martin Semmens previously insisted would not happen.

Speaking in January, he said: "Danny is focussed on playing games for us and does not want to talk about his future contract, I think people forget that they are humans.

"He has a contract with us for 18 months and he will be with us for that time and we will sit down and talk about the future at some time before then.

"There are no issues. I know everybody is looking for a story but he has a contract with us and we hope he will stay beyond that."

In his time with Southampton, 28-year-old Ings has scored 46 goals in 100 matches in all competitions.
