Spurs hold Real Madrid at Bernabeu as Liverpool put seven past Maribor

Tottenham Hotspur has battled to a commendable 1-1 draw at the home of reigning European champion Real Madrid, while Liverpool enjoyed a thumping win on the road in the Champions League.

Spurs went ahead at the Bernabeu thanks to an own goal from Real defender Rafael Varane, who was flicked the ball in accidentally following a Harry Kane backheel in the box.

Real Madrid levelled via a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, but otherwise were largely untroubled for the remainder of the match in an assured defensive display.

The opposite was true for Slovenia's NK Maribor, which copped a 7-0 thrashing on home turf at the hands of a rampant Liverpool, which rediscovered its groove in front of goal.

A brace to Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, plus goals to Philippe Coutinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Trent Alexander-Arnold sealed an emphatic win away from home to get the Reds' European campaign back on track.

In a good night for Premier League teams, Manchester City had first-half goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus to thank for a 2-1 win over Napoli, with the visitors hitting back from the penalty spot in the second stanza via Amadou Diawara.

Russian side Spartak Moscow exploded into life with a 5-1 win over Sevilla FC, while Shakhtar Donetsk clinched a 2-1 away win over Feyenoord.

RB Leipzig beat FC Porto 3-2, Besiktas shocked AS Monaco 2-1 in the principality, while Cypriot minnow APOEL Nicosia held Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw.
