Tim Sherwood believes that Tottenham dodged a bullet by not signing Ryan Sessegnon last summer.
The Fulham starlet was linked with a move to both Spurs and Manchester United last summer, but opted to stay with the Cottagers for their return to the Premier League.
Sessegnon has endured a difficult campaign at Craven Cottage this term with Scott Parker's side being relegated with a whimper, and Sessegnon showing precious little in terms of his undoubted potential.
Speaking to Bwin , Sherwood said that it's crucial that the youngster picks a position to specialise in before he can become a top talent.
He said: "I think Tottenham should forget about signing Ryan Sessegnon and probably thank their lucky stars they didn’t spend a fortune on him last summer.
"Sessegnon is a very young player but he had a very disappointing season for a player tipped to cost a fortune less than 12 months ago.
"I don’t think Sessegnon has decided what he wants to be yet. He doesn’t know if he is a full back or a winger and I can’t see him fulfilling that potential until he settles in one position.
"Sessegnon has been damaged as a result of Fulhams’ season in the Premier League."
