Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen passes concussion tests after worrying head injury against Ajax

Tottenham fans would have been worried when they witnessed defender Jan Vertonghen leave the field of play in a bad way following a clash in the first half of the club's Champions League defeat to Ajax.

The Belgian international was caught by Ajax goalkeeper André Onana as both players challenged for the ball in the Dutch side's penalty area.

Despite visible blood, the 32-year-old initially seemed fit to continue the game, with the referee double checking before he was allowed back onto the pitch after treatment.

However, a couple of seconds later, Vertonghen was clearly not right as he signalled to the Spurs bench. The Tottenham man was immediately replaced by Moussa Sissoko, and seemed unsteady on his feet as he left the field helped by Spurs staff.

As the match continued, Vertonghen received treatment and assessments in the medical room of the new stadium.

Initial reports are bringing seemingly good news, with Evening Standard reporter, Dan Kilpatrick , reporting that the defender has passed all of the concussion tests that he has been through tonight.

More tests on the defender are expected tomorrow, but if the defender passes them, then there is a good chance that he will be available for the second leg at the Johan Cruijff Arena, where Spurs will look to overturn a the one-goal defecit.

Before that, the Lillywhites are in Premier League action against Bournemouth in the early kick off on Saturday.
