Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of striker Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica for the remainder of the Premier League season with a permanent option to buy later down the line.
The frontman has been Mourinho's main target for the role to provide backup and support to Harry Kane this summer. Spurs initially moved for the 25-year-old earlier in the window but Benfica's price tag was closer to the £50million mark.
However, the Portuguese side's failure to get through the Champions League qualification stages changed matters.
Spurs returned for the player and tied up a deal, leading to a very happy manager in Jose Mourinho who has been craving a second striker.
Benfica confirmed late on Thursday night that they agreed to loan Carlos Vinicius to Spurs for the season for £2.73m. They also revealed that Tottenham then have an option to purchase him for roughly a further £38m.
The Brazilian had a real breakthrough season with Benfica in the last campaign with 24 goals and 13 assists in 47 games for the Portuguese side.
With Vinicius playing in European competition last season, there are no problems expected with a work permit. While the move has been completed before Sunday's trip to face Manchester United at Old Trafford, it is not in time for him to be registered for the match.
The striker moving to London is the first frontman to do so since the club released Fernando Llorente 14 months ago, with the likes of Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura providing the firepower outside of captain Kane.
