Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal among Premier League clubs to oppose Champions League changes

Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal are among a group of Premier League clubs who are ready to fight against proposed changes to the Champions League that could see the expulsion of the League Cup, according to reports.

The Sun report that nine Premier League clubs are against the changes that are to be proposed by the European Clubs Association in November, that will see the Champions League group stage be increased so that teams play 14 group games.

However, with the new proposal, the only way that teams would be able to take part in the midweek fixtures would be to either back out of, or field youth teams in the League Cup, which would be a major blow to the competition.

The ECA's proposals will also see a third tier European competition be established, meaning that the number of European matches would be increased from 407 to 647.

However, a number of Premier League clubs are not happy with the idea and are ready to oppose it should it become a formal proposal. The top six clubs of the league, including Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal will join forces with Leicester City, Everton and Newcastle United to reject the plans.

An insider from the Premier League outlined the reasons for the opposition.

“This is a sign the biggest clubs recognise the importance of English football as a whole," they told the Sun.

“They are not fighting for themselves — they would potentially earn more money from Europe.

“But they know it would damage the Premier League, the EFL, even the National League. It is about helping to keep the whole game alive.”

A general meeting next month will see the clubs come together to discuss the proposal, with the Premier League clubs ready to fight against the changes.
