Spurs boss Jose Mourinho gives curious answer to question over January transfer plans

Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho insists that he is not looking at just bringing in defenders in the January transfer window.

Spurs have conceded two goals in each of the four matches Mourinho has overseen in all competitions since being appointed as head coach to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

That includes the 2-1 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, which was Mourinho's first loss as Spurs head coach.

There are doubts over the long-term future of three of Spurs' defenders, with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen out of contract next summer and Danny Rose's contract expiring one year later.

But when asked at his pre-match press conference ahead of the game with Burnley this weekend whether Spurs need more defenders in January, Mourinho gave a curious response.

"It’s not the defence. It’s the defensive process which is a different thing," he said.

"When we speak about defence we speak about keepers, centre-backs, the mistakes you make at the back.

"That's not the way I look at things.

"I don’t look at individuals but the defensive process, and that belongs to 11 players on the pitch. It is in our organisation that we have to resolve our problems, not about one players, or signings. It's a process."

Spurs' next opportunity to try and improve their defensive record is when they host Burnley at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow (Saturday).
