Spurs boss Jose Mourinho defends his youth record with claim about Man United's Scott McTominay

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho has reacted to criticism of his record in regards to youth players in previous jobs.

The former Manchester United, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid boss has developed something of a reputation for not putting his trust in young players.

Instead, the saying goes that the Portuguese manager prefers ready made and experienced players.

The 58-year-old has been criticised in the past for allowing the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne to leave Chelsea rather than trying to find a role for them in the team.

But ahead of the Champions League dead rubber against Bayern Munich, Mourinho was asked about the criticism on his record of handling youth players, and made a defiant statement.

"Scott McTominay is only the best player at Manchester United," Mourinho told reporters.

"Raphael Varane is the best defender in the world."

Mourinho was an early champion of McTominay in his time at Old Trafford, giving the young midfielder his debut and bringing him into the first team on a permanent basis.

The 23-year-old has become an important player for United in the absence of Paul Pogba through injury, earning rave reviews in big games such as the wins against Spurs and Manchester City.
