Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon receives promotion

Becky Hammon continues to move up the coaching ranks.

Hammon, who became the first woman to interview for an NBA head coaching job when she met with the Milwaukee Bucks in May, has been promoted by the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced on Wednesday.

Hammon, 41, will take the spot on the Spurs' bench vacated by James Borrego, who was named the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets on May 10.

Hammon has been a member of Gregg Popovich's coaching staff as an assistant, mostly sitting behind the team's bench during games, since 2014 following a 16-year playing career in the WNBA, including eight seasons with the Liberty.

She also served as the head coach of the Spurs' entry in the Las Vegas Summer League in 2015 and 2016.
