Spurned lover glassed himself after girlfriend updated Facebook relationship status

A spurned lover smashed a wine glass against his head after his girlfriend refused to give their relationship another try.

Sean Stanley needed eight staples in the resulting wound, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week.

Stanley, 29, of Anniversary Avenue, East Kilbride, admitted a charge of threatening or abusive behaviour.

Alice Carey, prosecuting, said the incident happened on November 3 at his girlfriend's home in the town.

The couple had been an item for several months and lived together for a spell. But when she "updated her relationship status" on Facebook, Stanley lost his cool and started shouting at her.

Ms Carey told the court: "The complainer kept asking him to calm down. He was continually asking her if they could try again.

"She said no and he then struck himself on the head with a glass of wine he was holding.

"The accused eventually left the house and the complainer contacted the police."

Stanley was charged and released on condition that he did not contact the woman. But the court heard that within hours he had sent her Facebook messages.

Defence agent Marco Guarino pointed out that Stanley has no previous convictions.

He added: "This was a toxic relationship.

"My client now accepts it is over and for both parties I think it's an experience they best put behind them.

"The accused says his life has improved dramatically since the relationship ended."

Sheriff Ray Small deferred sentence on the threatening or abusive behaviour charge for two months for good behaviour.

Stanely was fined £200 for the "blatant" breach of the undertaking he had been given by police not to contact the woman again.
