The Japanese Olympic Committee plans to appoint sprinter Ryota Yamagata as the captain of the Japanese team for the Tokyo Games, according to sources.
Women's table tennis player Kasumi Ishikawa is the most likely candidate for vice-captain, the sources said.
Yamagata, 29, is the national record holder in the 100 meters with a time of 9.95 seconds. He secured an Olympic berth by placing third in the men's 100 meters at the Japan Athletics Championships on Friday.
Ishikawa, 28, has already been officially recognized by the JOC as a member of the Japanese team.
The introduction ceremony for the team is scheduled for July 6.
