April 10--Sprint said it will open 27 additional locations in the Chicago area Friday, all to be within RadioShack stores.
The Overland Park, Kan.-based mobile-service provider is expanding across the country, with plans to open smaller shops inside the troubled electronics retailer.
In all, Sprint will open 1,435 new Sprint-RadioShack locations around the United States, including 57 in Illinois.
Inside the new, co-branded locations, the stores will exclusively sell Sprint prepaid and postpaid mobile devices. The company will hire about 130 new employees for the Illinois stores, a spokeswoman said.
In February, RadioShack filed for bankruptcy and announced that many locations, including several in the south suburbs would be closing. Last week, however, General Wireless, an affiliate of Standard General, acquired 1,743 RadioShack Stores. Then, Sprint and General Wireless agreed to join forces, with Sprint as the primary brand in marketing materials and signage, the companies said in a statement.
