Sprinklers flood East Midlands Airport and close Burger King, WHSmith and others

East Midlands Airport was forced to close a number of businesses over the weekend due to floods. Frankie & Benny's, a Castle Rock bar, Burger King and WHSmith all closed to customers on Sunday, October 9, after sprinklers in a storage cupboard were activated, flooding water into the surrounding area.

The incident meant passengers could only access Pork and Pickle, Proof 65, Starbucks, Boots Escape Lounge and Greggs in the arrival hall as well as vending machines. A spokesman for the airport, near Castle Donington, told Leicestershire Live on Tuesday that all shops except Burger King had reopened.

In an update provided to Nottinghamshire Live today (Wednesday, October 12) the spokesman said the fast food outlet remained closed. "Nothing has changed since yesterday," he said. "The only unit that remains closed is Burger King. Everything else is open."
