Springtime boost for easyJet

Good news for easyJet today - GB Airways, the airline it acquired in October for £103m, is performing well.

The airline said that GB Airways' February and March load factor, which is the percentage of seats occupied, was expected to be above 85%.

Shares in easyJet were up 16.2p at 428.75p on the news, as the airline has recently had a difficult time of things.

Its shares have fallen more than 30% since the beginning of the year on fears of a severe airline passenger slowdown in the current economic climate.

The airline posted weak passenger numbers at the beginning of January, sparking fears that the budget sector, which is pouring profits into new aircraft on new routes, was getting ahead of itself in terms of passenger demand.

Ryanair has also warned on profits. So the GB Airways news was a strong boost to easyJet. The group added over 30% of the summer schedule seats had already been sold - a similar figure to last year.
