Springsteen fans are pointing out some of the small but important inaccuracies in ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’

Bruce Springsteen loves a story. That’s part of what makes his shows so special. He will just talk and talk and talk and then suddenly you’re listening to “The River” live. It’s magical. But it also means we know a LOT about Springsteen.

And when I say “a lot,” I do mean random details that make something like the new film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere difficult. I loved the movie and what it did for my favorite album, Nebraska. But it has been hilarious watching many online realize that the movie takes some “creative” choices that Springsteen seemingly signed off on. Despite talking at length at one of his concerts about how much he hates…mustard.

In the film, Bruce (Jeremy Allen White) is talking to his girlfriend’s (Odessa Young) kid about hot dogs. First, the girlfriend doesn’t actually exist and neither did the kid. They’re a combination of a bunch of different ideas from Springsteen. But second: Bruce says that he likes mustard on his hot dog. Which, fine. Something we could move past.

EXCEPT that Bruce Springsteen got on stage and complained about how much he hates mustard. “In Deliver Me from Nowhere, Bruce Springsteen says his favorite hotdog condiment is mustard but in real life, Bruce Springsteen HATES mustard so much he did a whole yap about it during a show,” a user whose handle is GenZBruceFan posted.

Yes, the girlfriend stuff was confusing but I do think it is funny that the thing we’re all nitpicking at is the fact that Springsteen hates mustard. Clearly, he didn’t care in this context or he would have pointed it out to director Scott Cooper and the creative team but it does make me wonder what happened to him the day of that concert. Who put mustard on his sandwich?
