Springholm Nursery aiming to return to village school as council puts contract out to tender

Springholm Nursery is aiming to return home.

The council has put out a tender to take on the nursery space being created at the village’s primary school.

And Springholm Nursery – which is currently based in the village hall – hopes their bid is successful.

If so, it would mean a return to their original home when the group started in 1985.

Nursery committee chairman, Tracey Smithers, said: “The school already has a lot of connections to Springholm Nursery – over the years a lot of children who have come up through the nursery have gone to the school.

“I think it would benefit the whole of the village and encourage more families with younger children to come here, although we do have children coming from Crocketford, Corsock and Kirkpatrick Durham so it’s not just Springholm.”

Three outdoor learning pods are going to be built at Springholm Primary, while there are also plans to convert a classroom into a nursery space.

The tender documents show the local authority is looking for an experienced provider with a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an outdoor environment. That’s something Mrs Smithers feels the nursery – which currently has nine youngsters – already provides.

She added: “We already do a lot of outdoor learning with chick rearing and visits to see the beehives.

“Springholm Primary does a lot of outdoor learning and there are three children there who were at Springholm Nursery who love being out in the playground.

“We were talking at a meeting on Monday about what would happen if someone else got the tender. I would hope we would be able to continue.

“But the charity documents show when the nursery started in 1985 it was at the school and we would love to go back.”
