Springburn author wins booker prize for novel that is 'love letter' to Glasgow

The Glasgow author Douglas Stuart has won the Booker Prize for his first novel, Shuggie Bain.

The book was praised earlier this year by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, as it follows a boy growing up in poverty in 1980s Glasgow with a mother who is battling addiction.

She said of his win tonight: "I’m so thrilled for @Doug_D_Stuart - Shuggie Bain is a raw, searing and beautifully tender novel. Such a worthy winner of @TheBookerPrizes - and he now joins James Kelman as one of just two Scottish writers to win the prize. Many congratulations!"

Shuggie Bain is dedicated to Stuart’s mother, who died of alcoholism when he was 16.

Douglas, who is from Glasgow's south side, told Glasgow Live he was "totally overwhelmed" to see the First Minister's reaction to the book, and that Shuggie Bain was "a story for our time, as well as for all times".

After graduating from the Royal College of Art in London, Douglas moved to New York City, where he began a career in fashion design.

Speaking to Glasgow Live last week, Douglas said: "The book really is a love letter to Glasgow. I love Glasgow, and I missed it, and it took me 12 years to write the book but when I was writing I felt like it kept me connected to the city.

"Glasgow is a character in the book - its a Glasgow love, tenacious and intimate. I couldn't leave Glasgow off the page - it started opening up to me when I started writing.

"There is nowhere else in the world like Glasgow".
