Forecasters have pushed back the arrival of spring snow showers in the Chicago area to Tuesday afternoon, with freezing temperatures expected Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

The National Weather Service had said the snow was expected to hit early Tuesday. Temperatures are now expected to dip to near freezing in the afternoon, with rain showers turning to slushy snow.

Snow, mixed w/ some rain, will spread across the area through early evening. The snow may become more showery in nature across N. IL this afternoon, resulting in brief bursts and quick accums. Much of the accumulation will occur on only non-paved surfaces. pic.twitter.com/8nIi2Cs04q

The weather service has issued a freeze watch for Tuesday night, warning residents to cover sensitive plants to protect them from temperatures in the upper 20s. There’s also another chance of freezing temperatures Wednesday night, forecasters said.

Sub-freezing temperatures are likely both Tonight and Wednesday night across the area, including in the core of the Chicago metro. Prepare now by protecting sensitive vegetation and exposed seasonal water lines such as hoses and fountains. #ilwx #inwx pic.twitter.com/qUE00HzFxN
