Spotted in Shawlands: Spirited resident issues call to action for neighbours after community clean up

A passionate resident of Shawlands has issued a rallying call to neighbours after a community clean up.

The unknown author of this spirited note, which was pinned to a lamppost on Edgemont Street, was not pulling any punches with the message they wanted to get across.

It would seem a recent spruce up of the area by householders has become a talking point on the street, after one person attempted to express their thanks to those who turned out to take part - and apologised for not being able to help.

And it galvanized another to get their voice heard on the matter.

The poster, spotted by an eagle-eyed Glasgow Live reader, said: "Dear residents of Edgemont Street.

"Whilst we, like all other neighbours, thoroughly appreciate an aesthetically pleasing community, we have some points of concern regarding the manner in which residents are asked to volunteer.

"Firstly, residents should never feel shamed into coming out to help.

"Many people work at the weekends. For others, the weekend is a brief period of respite from the struggle and toil of selling our labour all week long."

After defending those who were not able to join the clean up, the writer takes a more political stance.

They add: "Secondly, we note that no mention is made of the council's austerity budget which has caused our public services to contract, leaving our communities worse for wear."

And they have some words of advice for neighbours with regards to an upcoming union ballot of council refuse collectors.

The poster states: "We hope that in the coming weeks all residents will be as vocal in their support for industrial action over their pay and conditions.

"If we want a tidy and charming neighbourhood then we'd encourage you to lobby your councillor on public sector provision, join a trade union and show solidarity with other workers who are taking action to protect our public services and do not allow individualism to replace a well funded public sector.

"Stay angry."
