Spotlight shone on Glasgow women of the past in new 'Herstory trail'

A Glaswegian library is shining a light on an often overlooked part of Glasgow’s past - with a new trail highlighting the history of women on the city.

Behind the busy city streets and tenement blocks we all pass daily are some true hidden treasures that reveal at the incredible lives lead by Glasgow women.

Now residents are able to download a Glasgow Women’s Heritage Walk map and discover the "Herstort Trail' for themselves.

Glasgow Women’s Library created the unique trail, saying: “Given the ongoing lockdown in Scotland, our Spring programme of walks hasn’t gone ahead, but in recent weeks our intrepid volunteer tour guides have continued to be out and about in their local areas, often discovering hidden treasures. One particular focus for their walks has been images celebrating women in all sorts of guises."

Highlights on the trail include Rosie the Riveter in a house window, a compassionate masked doctor painted on a wall, a gardener tending her flowers, as well as landmarks which relate to women’s history: statues, plaques, street names as well as Girls and Ladies inscriptions above the entrance to schools and libraries.

They are also encouraging residents to add to the list, asking locals to get in touch if they can think of any  statues, buildings, plaques or murals of note that deserve a place on the trail.
