Spotify Wrapped 2023: A Closer Look at Latino Artists Who Top the Year in Listening

As you might have already found out from pretty much everyone you follow on social media, Spotify's 2023 Wrapped was officially revealed this Wednesday. It's the perfect moment to review your year in listening and discover a few facts about yourself you might have not known — I seemed to listened a whole lot to Luis Miguel. But besides giving you a glimpse at your particular tastes, Spotify Wrapped also gives us a good understanding of the current state of the music industry and its trends. So how exactly did Latino artists perform during this year?

The bad news first. For the first time since 2019, a non-Latino musician topped the list of most streamed global artists in the world. Let us rephrase that: someone other than Bad Bunny topped the list. El Conejo Malo was dethroned after three consecutive years at the top by Taylor Swift, who amassed more than 26.1 billion global streams since January 1. To quote Spotify: Congrats Swifties, it's been a long time coming.

Nevertheless, Latino fingerprints are all over Spotify Wrapped this year. The Top 10 Global Artists of 2023 feature three Latino musicians, with Bad Bunny in second place, Peso Pluma in fifth and KAROL G at number 9. The three of them are also featured on the Top 10 Global Albums list, which is led by Bad Bunny's. MAÑANA SERÁ BONITO by KAROL G is ranked fifth and GÉNESIS by Peso Pluma clocks in at ninth. A salient fact about this ranking is that Bad Bunny didn't take home the top prize for his latest album, Nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana, but for his previous one, Un Verano Sin Ti, despite the fact that it was released in 2022.

Elsewhere in the rankings, perennial powerhouse Shakira makes an appearance in the Top 10 Songs Globally thanks to her collab with Bizarrap coming in at number 5. The list also includes the hit song Ella Baila Sola by Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma.

Spotify also revealed the list of the top 25 podcasts of 2023, which includes five podcasts made by Latinos and are spoken entirely in Spanish:

  • Relatos de la Noche, from Mexico at at number 6.
  • Caso 63, from Chile at number 12.
  • Psicología Al Desnudo, from Argentina at number 13.
  • La Cotorrisa, from Mexico at number 22.
  • Se Regalan Dudas, from Los Angeles at number 23.

Wrapped is one of the most popular Spotify features of the year and, as it's happened in previous editions, the music streaming platform has also come up with quirky, social elements that turn its insights into sharable features. For example, this year the platform will match up your listening habits to one of 12 listening characters that include "Shapeshifter" for listeners who switch a lot between artists and "Alchemist" for those who favor creating playlists. Another feature is called Sound Town, which matches you with a city where listening habits are similar and the same artists are often shared.
