Spotify hiking prices by £24 a year for some customers - how to cut down costs

Spotify is to hike prices by up to £24 per year for some customers, with the changes coming in for new users this week.

The increases will see its Premium Family package - which allows six people in one household use the same Spotify account - go up by £2 per month from £14.99 to £16.99.

Its Premium Student package is going up by £1 per month, from £4.99 to £5.99, while its Premium Duo package will also increase by £1 per month, from £12.99 to £13.99.

The student package is for those in higher education, while the Duo subscription allows up to two people in the same household to use the same Spotify account.

The changes will come into force for new customers from this Friday, April 30, or for existing users, the increases will start from their June bill.

For those on a free trial of any of the packages that are increasing, you will be given one month at the current price before your subscription goes up.

Spotify's Premium package - which costs £9.99 per month - is staying at the same price.

What to do if you’re unhappy with the price increases

There isn’t much you can do in terms of getting Spotify to lower its prices - but there are ways to cut back costs.

You can use Spotify for free - eliminating all monthly prices - but there are limitations to what you can do.

Free Spotify has adverts and only lets you skip a certain number of songs an hour depending on what device you’re using, so you’re less able to pick what music you want to listen to.

If that isn’t for you, and you were planning on getting Spotify anyway, you can benefit from the lower prices from now until your June bill if you sign up before April 30.

But again, this would only really save you money if you were planning on getting Spotify anyway.

Another way to save cash is to downgrade to a lower subscription.

We haven’t seen reports of Spotify increasing its £9.99 Premium package - so if you pay more than this, you can save money by switching to that service.

Keep in mind that Premium is only for one user.

If more than one person in your household has a subscription to Spotify, and you both pay for your own package, it could pay you to share one account and split the cost between you.

The best package depends on how many people use it in your home.

Finally, you can also cancel Spotify for free without incurring a charge by going into your account settings.

A spokesperson for Spotify said: "We offer a variety of subscription plans tailored to our users’ needs.

"We occasionally update our prices to reflect local macroeconomic factors and meet market demands while offering an unparalleled service."
