Sportwatch: WBBL begins, Melbourne Victory v Wanderers and more – as it happened

Summary

With the early season injury to Ola Toivonen, there was always a sense that the A-League hadn’t quite seen the best of Melbourne Victory yet. Well, the scales have fallen from the eyes now.

An imperious and imposing performance from Victory, and tonight it was the Wanderers who were made to look distinctly pedestrian.

Marcus Babbel’s side face big questions over the coming weeks, not least among that the morale of star players like Oriel Riera who looked a frustrated and forlorn figure for large periods. If things go “Bruno Fornaroli” in coming weeks it could be a very long season for Wanderers faithful, who have already endured comprehensive floggings from both Victory and sworn rivals Sydney FC.

It was a more fortuitous showing for their crosstown rivals, with the Sky Blues lucky to perhaps take the points in Gosford.

Meanwhile, Adelaide United’s unbeaten start to the W-League continued with a dramatic 90 + 7th minute equaliser. The Boomers and the Flames enjoyed WNBL wins, while South African Lizelle Lee smashed a remarkable ton to light up the opening day of the Women’s Big Bash League, as the Melbourne Stars defeated the reigning champions, the Sydney Sixers.

And that’s Saturday Sportwatch.

Full-time: Melbourne Victory 4-0 Western Sydney Wanderers

So an emphatic display in the end - and a real shot across the bows of all their A-League rivals: Melbourne Victory are a force to be reckoned with.

Wanderers in all sorts. A tough week of self-reflection ahead, before a big chance to get back to winning ways next Friday against the Mariners.

Updated

90 + 2 min: Well, if there’s anyone who deserves a goal in a Wanderers shirt, it’s perhaps Riera, but Lawrence Thomas is in no mood for charity, producing an excellent save after Kamau sends him through.

In fairness, he might also have deserved a straigh red card for his earlier off-the-ball incident with Toivonen, so you win some, you lose some, I guess.

89 min: Wanderers look to fashion something, but it only leaves them vulnerable on the counter once again; and Antonis finds Barbarouses with a sublime 40m ball. The New Zealand international speeds past the Wanderers backline, but he can’t find the finish.

87 min: It’s a freekick from an acute angle, and you just sense Honda might have a ping here. And he does, the Japanese, but Janjetovic gets his body behind the shot.

They’ve had 10 shots on target tonight, the Victory. And you can’t fault the Wanderers ‘keeper for the scoreline.

85 min: Kevin’s delirious, here. He’s brought on another youngster. Halcyon days at the Melbourne Victory football club. On comes Rahmat Akbari.

Goal! Melbourne Victory 4-0 Wanderers (Antonis)

83 min: Ouch. That’s lovely once again, from Victory! Toivonen - to Barbarouses - the cross to Honda, the layoff to Antonis, and moushka - cop that, he says!

Like shelling peas, that was just lovely crisp stuff from Melbourne. The home fans will go home very happy tonight - they’ve witnessed liquid football.

81 min: And with the luxury of a 3-0 buffer, Kevin Muscat treats himself to the decadent option of allowing a young player some minutes. A whole nine of them for Josh Hope.

78 min: Toivonen continues to toil well up front for Melbourne - it’s an import chance to build his fitness, after that early season injury layoff.

The Wanderers continue to press, or at least attempt to press. You can imagine the message from Babbel at half-time was to at least try and win the half.

74 min: Meanwhile, it’s the end of the shift for the Wanderers playmaker Baumjohann, as Nick Fitzgerald comes on - a third and final change for the visitors.

W-League: Full-time - Melbourne City 1-1 Adelaide United

So the off-season hangover continues for the back-to-back-to-back champions, who fail to win for the fourth time in five games already this season.

What a terrific comeback from the Lady Reds. Haven’t they come on in leaps and bounds in the last season or two from a team that was little more than a speedbump in early seasons. Great result.

Ooph. And if you like you’re drama - how’s this!

In the W-League, Adelaide have snatched one, in the 90 + 7th minute!

68 min: And a yellow card for Llorente, who catches Barbarouses late, and heavily.

65 min: It’s a heavy coming together between Thomas and Riera. Gee, he’s been in the wars, the Wanderers striker. He will need one hell of a bubble bath and a Horlicks after this one tonight, he’s been battered.

The ‘keeper’s come with the punch, and he’s collected the striker in the kopf. Ouch.

61 min: It’s a rare counter attack from Wanderers, but Victory recover well to block Riera’s initial effort, and Baumjohann’s follow up cross can’t find a teammate.

58 min: They continue to work the short passes and move around the pitch, do Victory. They’ve enjoyed over 63% possession, and they’re passing at 85% accuracy.

And it’s Honda who sends Toivonen through one-on-one.. and again Janjetovic does brilliantly! They could have copped six if it wasn’t for their ‘keeper tonight, the Wanderers.

56 min: The Swede now with a thumping effort from distance, but it’s Janjetovic again with strong hands.

Surely he leaves this game with a goal to his name, Toivonen.

54 min: Honda with a superlative piece of skill! With almost no room to work in, he flicks a pass to a teammate. And after recycling possession, despite the eager attempts from those in Wanderers white to press, it lands with Toivonen, who in fairness should score with the header!

51 min: Victory with a sustained run of possession, but they’re forced to the flanks, as Wanderers press well through the middle.

Riera then thumps a ball into the back of the Victory net.. but it’s ruled for offside! Sotirio very clearly a metre or two clear in the buildup, so further frustration, albeit the correct decision, for the Spaniard.

48 min: It’s a shot on target for the Wanderers, from Bruce Kamau. But that poses little difficulty for Thomas between the posts.

Victory look to bring on Broxham for Baena, who takes a heavy knock in a tackle from Bacchus.

Updated

Second half!

So, it’s an immediate response from Babbel - the fourth official signals a double change at half-time: it’s Marc Tokich and Jaushua Sotirio on for Abraham Majok and Jordan O’Doherty.

He’s scatching of his side’s effort in a brief half-time interview: “It was men against boys”.

Let’s see what they offer in this 45 instead.

And we’ve had a goal from down the road - where in the W-League Melbourne City have taken the lead against Adelaide United; and it’s Kyah Simon from the penalty spot.

About 30 minutes to play in that one, as the big-spending three-time champions look to secure just their second win in five under new coach Rado Vidosic.

Half-time: Melbourne Victory 3-0 Western Sydney Wanderers

Do not adjust your browsers. This has been just scintillating stuff from the home side. The combinations between Toivonen, Antonis, Barbarouses and Honda have been sublime.

Huge challenges for Marcus Babbel’s men. He’ll earn his corn, the German legend, if he can stem the bleeding here.

Updated

45 + 2 min: No let off, as Victory look to counter swiftly, once again through the middle with Toivonen.

He’s been a real handful this half. Like a skillful Matt Simon.

44 min: And they’re not resting on their laurels, the Victory. Toivonen, to Antonis - a lovely cushioned ball. Janjetovic races off his line to try and halt, but it spills to Honda! Terrific work from the Japanese, but the Wanderers defence just scramble at the expense of a corner.

They can’t wait for half-time, Western Sydney!

42 min: Ay, ay, ay. We have a VAR check as Toivonen goes to ground from the restart. There’s the suggestion of an off-the-ball elbow from Riera. He has to watch himself, the Spaniard - that could have been a straight red card!

VAR says no; Chris Beath speaks to Riera - no cards, and play on.

Penalty! Victory 3-0 Wanderers (Barbarouses)

39 min: Elrich got twisted all ends up as the flying Kiwi looped a ball over the makeshift defender, and as he turned he lost his footing, inadvertently bring down the forward, and referee Chris Beath pointed to the spot.

It’s Barbarouses to take it, and he makes no mistake!

36 min: Now it’s Honda with a firmly driven effort - they’re almost lining up, the Victory. Janjetovic does well to get a firm palm away from danger, that was motoring, that strike.

And it could be about to go from bad to worse..

34 min: He’s normally a holding mid, but with a re-jigged formation from Kevin Muscat he plays as a box-to-box midfielder tonight, and Baena does ever so well with the finish.

It’s a worm-burner. And he just snakes that into the bottom corner.

Goal! Melbourne Victory 2-0 Western Sydney Wanderers (Baena)

31 min: Deary, deary! It’s a slip from the Wanderers skipper Hamill in the heart of defence, that creates an opening for Victory’s on-loan holding midfielder, Baena. He shows composure, waits for Elrich to commit with the desperate covering lunge, then cuts back inside to caress a shot off the inside of the far post! Fine finish. Two-nil.

Updated

28 min: Close! Baumjohann with a set piece opportunity from about 30m out, and the German drops the effort on the roof of the net, but with Thomas in close attention.

25 min: Honda attempts a snap-shot, and it’s an effort on target, but he can’t generate the power. They’re sharp in transition as well, Victory. One, two, three. Shooting chance. Western Sydney can’t over-commit going forward or they’ll be punished.

23 min: So, the tempo slows a little, as Riera gets some strapping after those two heavy early tackles.

They concede a corner, Wanderers, and it’s Riera with the clearing header, ahead of Toivonen, Victory’s target man.

Updated

19 min: Corey Brown now clatters Oriel Riera. Ouch, a clumsy, “agricultural” challenge that one. Now it’s Thomas Deng who goes through the back of the Spaniard, who blows up in the direction of referee, Chris Beath.

He’s been almost a lone light for the Wanderers so far this season, Riera. Always a potential lifeline back into a game.

17 min: A loose ball falls to Honda, who plays a fine first time ball into the box for Barbarouses, but he can’t quite bring it under control, and Janjetovic comes to smother. They are looking incisive - that’s about the fourth time they’ve opened the Wanderers. Almost at will!

15 min: It’s a two-team contest, football, but there’s only one in this one, so far. What can Wanderers do to steady the ship?

Barbarouses, Toivonen, Antonis, Honda. They are looking in the mood up front, the Victory. And Western Sydney, in contrast are all at sea.

Goal! Melbourne Victory 1-0 Western Sydney Wanderers (Honda)

11 min: Ooooh, yes! A terrific goal. It’s Toivonen, who expertly picks out Antonis, who clips a lovely curving cross to the far post, and who should pop up with a trademark leap and inch-perfect header - the marquee man!

Janjetovic, no chance - that’s a delightful headed finish, to a very good team move.

Updated

9 min: A first look at the Victory goal for the visitors, as Majok fires an effort at Thomas, but it’s comfortably collected by the Victory custodian.

6 min: And we’ve an early card - makeshift centre half Tarek Elrich is booked after a tussle with Toivonen. Eek. Head coach Marcus Babbel won’t want to see that. It could be a long 84 minutes for the Socceroo, from here.

Keisuke Honda looks to fire in the freekick.. but it flashes over!

3 min: Ay, ay, ay! It’s Toivonen one-on-one with Janjetovic, but the former Sydney FC shotstopper gets down well to smother!

It’s a shaky start from the visitors; and that’s a big let off. It should be 1-nil.

Kick off!

1 min: Andiamo. Victory with the early running as Barbarouses and Toivonen nearly combine in the box with less than two minutes gone.

And a reminder, we’ve got W-League action also underway in Melbourne (plenty of sport flying round the Victorian capital tonight).

We’re about 30 minutes gone there, but it remains 0-0 between Melbourne City and Adelaide United. We’ll try to bring you the major moments from that one as well.

He opened his A-League account last week in his first start, but there’s so much more to Ola Toivonen’s game than just goals.

With kickoff just round the corner, here’s a nice write up from Evan Morgan Grahame on the big Swede, who starts again tonight:

So, our team news for tonight:

And for the visitors, Western Sydney:

So, no James Troisi, no Georg Niedermeier for the home side - injury and perhaps a legacy of that concussion for the German defender, last week. Unchanged from the Wanderers.

“You shoot, and you hope it goes in, and I was lucky it did.

“When you strike a ball you know which one’s are good, and which one’s are rubbish. This one felt good.”

That’s the understatement of the season from Brandon O’Neill.

Admits it was a underwhelming performance from Sydney FC, especially in the first half, but they just managed to do enough.

We move our attention now to the feature match from Melbourne - where it’s Victory v Wanderers; starting shortly!

Full-time: Central Coast Mariners 1-2 Sydney FC

That she blows! It took a penalty and a howitzer to clinch it, but they’ve finished with the three points, the reigning premiers, despite a full-hearted effort from the hosts.

They stay rooted to the foot of the ladder, do the Mariners, but no lack of heart from Mulvey’s men.

Updated

90 + 5 min: It’s hussle and bustle, from Simon - as you’d expect - and he goes to ground in the box. But there’s nothing given. Nor should there have been. Time is just ebbing away for the hosts.

And now McGlinchey is pinged for offside.

90 + 3 min: Ay, ay. Le Fondre with another miss. A clear shooting chance, and he’s fluffed his lines a little, from a well-worked Sydney FC set piece.

90 min: And there’s six minutes added on! A few of those for the be-moonbooted pitch invader. Remarkable scenes.

Can the home fans (and the Gosford brass band) lift their side!

88 min: Le Fondre goes close! And at the other end Simon looks to hit back - but his header is off target.

Plenty of life in this one - what can the last few minutes contain?

85 min: Final sub from the hosts as Shabow comes on for Clisby - an attacker for a defender - and Mulvey chases the equaliser.

Will this hurt them against a team of Sydney’s quality in transition? That’s the gambit, I guess - but credit where it’s due for attacking intent.

81 min: Side netting! Mariners substitutes combine as Hiariej picks out Millar, who finds McGlinchey - but it’s the wrong side of the post!

Big chance for the home side. And as we increasingly stretch end-to-end, now it’s Zullo with a long-range effort! Sheesh, we’ve seen some good strikes today. Both midfields needing to work harder to shut some of these down, you have to say.

78 min: And that Twitter clip of the Brandon O’Neill has been uploaded. Refresh your screen and scroll back through our coverage, below - that’s a belter.

73 min: Gee, whiz! What is it with these lads called O’Neill?! Central Coast’s Aidan hit a belter last week to score, and he had Redmayne absolutely bricking it with that fierce effort from distance. Lovely strike - but he can’t level the brilliant effort from his namesake!

And as if pre-ordained in the stars, Matt Simon now goes into the book. Yellow card.

70 min: And if you thought that was unbelievable - we’ve not got a break in play for a pitch invader - wait for it - on crutches; and in a moonboot.

Confusing talent with ambition, that gentleman, he never really stood a chance. Like a three-legged greyhound with his mash already spiked. Game over, son.

Goal! Central Coast Mariners 1-2 Sydney FC (O’Neill)

65 min: EAT MY GOAALLLLLLL!!

That’s a howitzer from Brandon O’Neill, who takes one or two touches, sizes one up, and thumps an absolute tracer bullet from long range! No chance, Kennedy - from just outside the box. That’s a humdinger! Can’t wait for the video on Twitter. WOOF.

And the “we only sing when we’re winning” brigade like what they’ve just seen, and Sky Blue voices resound around Gosford Stadium.

Updated

63 min: An injury scare now for Simon, as the big Mariners front man limps out of a contest. We’ll watch this space.

Meanwhile, Melling goes into the book. And with the hour up a look at the respective benches. Gee, there’s not a whole lot there for either side. Who can be the X-factor?

59 min: Crossbar! Unlucky for Sydney, as van der Linden thumps a terrific freekick up and over the wall, past the despairing glove of Ben Kennedy - but the Dutchman is denied by the woodwork!

Tremendous strike from 30-35m out, very unfortunate not to open his A-League account.

Updated

52 min: A brighter start to the second stanza for the visitors, Sydney FC, so perhaps some tweaks from Corica have had an effect. Ben Kennedy berates his backline, the veteran perhaps not enjoying the front third space Sydney’s attackers have enjoyed.

Meanwhile Simon and van der Linden continue their running battle. The Dutchman picks up a yellow card.

Second half!

45 min: And we’re back underway in Gosford. No changes from either side - let’s see what Mike Mulvey and Steve Corica can wring from their chargers.

Meanwhile, if you like your sport a little more cerebral, here’s a nice write up on the conclusion of the recent chess world title clash:

I must admit, I for one have rekindled my love for the game. That is until Wikipedia told me there’s over 1,000 openings - meaning at least 998 I’ve never learned. Maybe in 2019?

WNBL: Sydney Uni Flames 85-64 Bendigo Spirit

Meanwhile, a boilover in the basketball - at the 11th time of asking it’s a first win of the season for the Flames!

An absolute showing from Brittany Smart, who finishes with 22pts, seven assists and five rebounds but in fairness it was a consummate performance from all her teammates, across the court - as they led from almost whistle to whistle, the Flames!

What confidence could that bring to their season?

Your thoughts on that opening stanza? And the penalty call/VAR decision? And Golec’s yellow?

And another potential talking point from my colleague Michael McGowan:

If they spent $1m on that enduring eyesore, the Hornsby fountain, then they can spent at least double that on a nice bronze number for Our Matt, no?

Send your thoughts to local mayor, Phillip Ruddock, I’m sure he’s amenable to your best suggestions.

Half-time: Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Sydney FC

So, it’s a cacophony of boos from the home side at the half-time whistle, as skipper Simon enjoys a heated discussion with the officials.

Anthony Golec picked up a 44th minute yellow after Le Fondre went to ground in what could very possibly be described as “an act of simulation”. They’re not best pleased, the Mariners - to be going in the sheds level after a half they would argue they dominated.

Goal! Central Coast Mariners 1-1 Sydney FC (Le Fondre)

43 min: He’s absolutely thumped that, the Englishman - right down the guts, and Kennedy has no chance; despite doing his utmost to get near it.

Six goals in six games - he’s really taken to this A-League caper like a duck to water.

Adam Le Fondre penalty strike

Updated

Penalty! VAR Scandal. Furore! A-League madness!

42 min: Look, it would be a shame to allow an A-League game to actually be determined by football, and the home fans are baying, as Rhyan Grant goes to ground in dramatic fashion, after a marginal clip from Jack Clisby inside the box.

They consider it upstairs; is it sufficient contact? No overrule - we have a spot kick!

39 min: It’s been a lively half so far, with the hosts if anything shading it for intensity and effort. They are coming off their first loss of the season, last week, Sydney - have they gone into their shell a little?

34 min: Meanwhile, it’s been end-to-end action in the A-League, where Ben Kennedy has needed to be at his best to deny first Le Fondre and then Ninkovic! Big right mitt from the veteran ‘keeper - Sydney FC are enjoying the recent momentum, but they still trail that Simon goal.

Football: Half-time - New Zealand 4-0 Fiji

And an update from the OFC Women’s Nations Cup final where it’s the favourites New Zealand effectively home and housed after just 45 minutes.

Experienced Football Fern Sarah Gregorius set the tone with a terrific run and cross to set up Rosie White in the opening minute, before the veteran dusted herself off from a foul in the box, to fire a second from the penalty spot. Betsy Hassett and Meikayla Moore also among the goals, with Fiji also down a player after a 40th minute red card. Yikes.

Updated

24 min: A corner to Sydney FC after some clever work from Le Fondre. Ball near post, it’s laid off by Zullo and a sharp save from Ben Kennedy between the sticks denies a fierce drive!

Goal! Central Coast Mariners 1-0 Sydney FC (Simon)

16 min: Yessss. The people’s prince! It’s some fine work from Matt Millar down the flank to feed in a decent ball, but good strength from the one-man-battering-ram, Simon, who tucks home centrally. It was a dipping cross, and he almost wasn’t sure whether to stoop for the header; but in the end he’s adjusted well to sweep him with the right boot!

We knew he would be a handful today, and he instantly bites the hand that used to feed him.

Mariners players celebrate
Matt Simon is congratulated by his Central Coast teammates. Photograph: Ashley Feder/Getty Images

Updated

14 min: Another injury break, as Jop van der Linden stays down after a fifty-fifty with Matty Simon. All ball, in fairness, but the Dutchman needs the magic spray on the shin before he continue. Rugged.

Ninkovic meanwhile appears to not be showing ill effects, as he combines nicely with Grant, and Sydney look to attack.

Updated

8 min: An early concern here for the reigning premiers as Milos Ninkovic limps to the sideline - a huge grimace across the face of the 2016/17 Johnny Warren medalist’s face - after a coming together with Jacob Melling.

We’ll keep you posted; hopefully he can play on, the Serbian - with Siem De Jong already sidelined, you’d hate to see another quality creative player out of the league.

Kick off!

And our early fixture from the A-League is underway in Gosford, where it’s the winless Mariners looking to kickstart their season against Sydney FC.

Can the be-armbanded Matt Simon come to haunt his former club? He attempts a very early long-range effort to catch his old teammate Andrew Redmayne off his line, but it comes to nought.

WNBL: Melbourne Boomers 73-67 Townsville Fire

Another good win across town in Melbourne in the WNBL, where despite a late fightback the Boomers have held on for a solid win over the Fire to consolidate second position on the ladder.

They led by almost 20 at one stage in the third quarter, but Townsville rallied late to make for a slightly nervy last few moments. Steph Talbot and Madeleine Garrick leading the way for the home side with 16 and 15 pts respectively, while for the visitors Zitina Aokuso impressed, dominating the boards with 10 rebounds as well as 12 pts.

And speaking of Boomers - if you it missed overnight, the men’s national team have booked their passage to next year’s World Cup with a solid showing over Iran:

WBBL: Melbourne Stars 166-3 (17.2) thump Sydney Sixers 165-7 (20)

Speaking of Cape Town, South African fans of women’s cricket will have seen some interest news start filtering through with four stars of their game in action during the opening weekend of season four of the Women’s Big Bash League.

In today’s opening fixture, Perth Scorchers squeaked home against Hobart Hurricanes thanks to Southern Stars willow-wielder Ellyse Villani:

But in the second fixture of the day, it was stars of Australia’s recent World T20 winning campaign - Ellyse Perry and Alyssa Healy - who were upstaged by one of their South African counterparts.

Lizelle Lee may have missed out in Antigua but she’s started in emphatic fashion in Melbourne, with an unbeaten century - 102* in fact, off just 56 balls - as the Melbourne Stars have blasted away the defending champs the Sydney Sixers. Ooph. Big result, just in.
