Thank you very much for your company today - lots to get through from cycling to softball and plenty in between. If you’re not sated there’s still more to come with the men’s final at the Australian Open on its way.

We’ll be back to do this all again soon.

A-League: Central Coast 1-3 Western Sydney

The Wanderers wrap things up in the last minute of stoppage time with a classic counterattacking goal. With the Mariners camped in Western Sydney territory a long ball into the box was cleared by Keanu Baccus, he intelligently fed the rapid Mo Adam who squared for Nicolai Muller to tee up debutant Simon Cox to smash beyond the helpless Mark Birighitti.

The JP de Marigny era begins with three points.

A-League: 83 mins: CCM 1-2 WSW: Two spot-kicks in the blink of an eye in Gosford! The Wanderers had barely finished celebrating their second goal when Pirmin Schewgler mistimed a challenge on Matt Simon and the big Mariner got up to drill the penalty low beyond Daniel Lopar.

NBL: A curious state of affairs today in the NBL with a leaky roof ending play.

A-League: And right on cue, the Wanderers make it 2-0 courtesy of a Mitch Duke Panenka penalty. Tommy Oar made a mess of a Wanderers ball over the top and in his desperation brought down Simon Cox. No arguments over the award of the spot kick that was cooly dispatched by the Western Sydney skipper.

A penny for Markus Babbel’s thoughts...

Updated

A-League: It remains CCM 0-1 WSW with 15-minutes remaining in Gosford but there have been chances aplenty throughout the match.

Cricket: Here’s the match report from Manuka Oval on another day out for Ellyse Perry.

Breaking: From the front of the paper (but related to sport) Bridget McKenzie has finally resigned.

Cricket: Some lovely Shane Watson appreciation from former opening partner Ed Cowan.

Cricket: Australia beat India by four wickets

It ended up nervier than expected at Manuka Oval with Australia making heavy weather of their target of 104 to beat India. That they did owes plenty to another extraordinary performance for the incredible Ellyse Perry. She took match-best figures of 4/13 with the ball then top-scored with 49 to anchor the run-chase.

All three sides now have one win and one defeat from their opening pair of matches.

Cricket: Ellyse Perry will not see Australia over the line herself but she has set up what will ultimately be a narrow victory after a starring role with both bat and ball.

A-League: Shortly before half-time Nicolai Müller has broken the deadlock in Gosford, giving the Wanderers the advantage.

Hockey: A great afternoon for Australia’s men against GB in the Pro League. The women’s half of the double-header is up next.

Cricket: Jess Jonassen has just holed out to long-on, leaving Australia 82-5 and making this Ellyse Perry v India battle even more awkward for the allrounder to navigate. 22 needed from 32 balls.

Softball: A comprehensive victory for Japan in the final of the Australia Pacific Cup in Sydney.

A-League: Goalless in the A-League after half-an-hour but there have been chances at both ends.

Hockey: It’s been a good day out for the Kookaburras in the Pro League.

Cricket: Ellyse Perry is doing Ellyse Perry things again. After taking 4/13 earlier she is now 35 off 32 balls and making light work of what was becoming an awkward run-chase. 26 still required off 38 balls for Australia with six wickets in hand.

Tennis: Ram & Salisbury beat Saville & Purcell in the final of the men's doubles at the Australian Open

Tennis: Defeat confirmed for Australian outsiders Saville and Purcell. Congratulations Salisbury and Ram!

Updated

Cricket: It’s getting nervy in Canberra. Ellyse Perry once again holds the key for Australia.

Tennis: Ram and Salisbury have taken a firm grip on the Australian Open doubles final, breaking Purcell and Saville then holding serve to lead 3-1 in the second set after already securing the opening set.

A-League: When too much sport is never enough... It’s time for the A-League to join the party.

Cricket: Make that 22 from 14 and out for Ashleigh Gardner. Australia in a spot of bother at 30-3. Time for another Ellyse Perry special. She’s at the crease alongside stand-in skipper Rachael Haynes.

Cricket: But it’s more bad news from Canberra with Beth Mooney the second wicket to fall. Australia now 30-2 in pursuit of India’s 103.

Despite the loss of a couple of batting partners Ash Gardner is lighting up Manuka Oval with 22 from just 12 balls.

Hockey: Half-time in the Pro League where it’s much better news for Australia.

Sydney Sevens: Make it stop!

Tennis: 11th seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury have taken the opening set of the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open 6-4. Tough battle ahead for the Australian pair of Max Purcell and Luke Saville.

Sydney Sevens: Yikes!

Cricket: A tough run of minutes for Australian representatives in a variety of sports also includes Alyssa Healy falling early in the tri-series run-chase. Australia are 14-1 after three overs in pursuit of India’s 103.

Sydney Sevens: It’s going from bad to worse at the rugby. Not a great all round for Australia’s representatives at Parramatta Stadium.

Sydney Sevens: Canada are on top of their semi-final with Australia at the break.

Hockey: It’s all happening in the Pro League.

Tennis: Bad news for Purcell and Saville. They’ve been broken by Ram and Salisbury and are now serving to stay in the opening set at 3-5.

Tennis: It’s on serve in the opening set of the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open with Saville and Purcell leading 3-2.

Hockey: It’s quarter-time in the Pro League and Australia have taken the lead against GB.

Cricket: India end their 20 overs on 103/9 at Manuka Oval. Perry finished with 4/13, Vlaeminck 3/13. Australia can be very happy with the first half of their day’s work.

Cycling: Dries Devenyns wins the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race

Belgium’s Dries Devenyns outlasts Pavel Sivakov to celebrate victory for the Deceuninck - Quick-Step Cycling Team in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

Updated

Everything is heating up now around the country.

There’s under 10km to go in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. The leaders still enjoy a 30-second advantage but Simon Yates has just launched a sprint to bring the peloton closer to the breakaway.

Australia’s women will soon be in action against Canada in the semi-finals of the Sydney Sevens.

India are now 86-8 with three overs remaining against Australia in the tri-series at Canberra.

The Pro League Hockey between the men of Australia and GB has just got underway.

Japan continue to dominate the softball against Australia in Sydney.

And it’s time for the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open, featuring Luke Saville and Max Purcell.

Cricket: But Perry does make it three wickets for the over after Sharma chips to Beth Mooney, who holds on after a juggle at gully.

And another one bites the dust when the rapid Vlaeminck returns to the attack India 82-7 now after 14.1.

Cricket: Big wicket for Australia with Harmanpreet Kaur caught at third for 28 off the bowling of superstar Ellyse Perry. And another next ball! Taniya Bhatia chips to point to leave Perry on a hat-trick and reeling at India 78-5 after 13.2 overs.

Deepti Sharma calmly denies Perry a hat-trick.

Softball: Japan are now up 3-0 against Australia in the final of the Australia Pacific Cup in Sydney.

Cycling: We’re into the last 30km of the 171km Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. There’s a six-strong breakaway group with a 25 second lead over the peloton. That breakaway features Australian Carter Turnbull.

Cricket: Australia remain on top of their tri-series clash with India. The visitors are 58-3 at the halfway point of their innings in Canberra.

Jess Jonassen has just removed the dangerous Smriti Mandhana but Harmanpreet Kaur remains at the crease.

NFL: Around 10.30am tomorrow (AEST) the eyes of the world will be on Miami for the Super Bowl. It’s the latest opportunity for Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes to state his credentials as the latest superstar of world sport.

But there’s something about Mahomes that seems accessible to everyone. It could be his teenage kisser or his Kermit-adjacent voice or the way he carves up his opponents with the warmest of smiles. It could be the sight of him swaggering into Arrowhead Stadium for an October kickoff in Satchel Paige’s Kansas City Monarchs jersey – an incredible gesture that pays respect to his new town, his father (a former Major League pitcher) and the under-heralded legacy of Negro Leagues baseball in one fell swoop.

Sydney Sevens: Probably the final update on Australia’s men for this liveblog. They take on New Zealand at 7pm in a match to decide 5th place in this year’s event. The Kiwis are ranked No 1 in World Rugby Sevens but got lumbered in a group of death alongside Fiji and had to settle for second place.

And the Australian Women’s Softball team is playing Japan in the final of the Australia Pacific Cup in Sydney. The next time they will meet up will be the Tokyo 2020 games

Thanks Elizabeth, I’ll add that to the list.

Japan are currently leading 2-0 at the top of the fourth.

Tennis: The major event later on is the men’s final of the Australian Open. Dominic Thiem has made great strides over the past fortnight but Novak Djokovic is an immovable object on Rod Laver Arena.

Updated

Cricket: Australia are on top early in their T20 tri-series contest with India. Stand-in skipper Rachel Haynes (deputising for the injured Meg Lanning) won the toss and sent India in to bat at Manuka Oval and she was rewarded with a brace of early wickets.

India are currently 31/2 after five overs.

Sydney Sevens: The news is much better for the Australian women’s team. They’re through to a semi-final date with Canada. That means two v three on the 2019–20 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series ladder.

Sydney Sevens: The news for Australia’s men is pretty catastrophic, I’m afraid to report. After routine victories over Japan and Scotland, Australia were hammered 43-7 by the USA. That defeat means the hosts will not progress to the knockout phase.

After three of ten rounds of the 2019-20 World Rugby Sevens Series Australia are ranked fifth of the 16 competing nations.

In England’s Premier League overnight Liverpool set a new record for dominance.

While bitter rivals Manchester United continued to pay the price for years of poor ownership, despite the debut of the latest star signing expected to cure many strategic faults all by himself.

Super Rugby is back for 2020 and Matt McILraith has filed an interesting story on Canterbury’s all-conquering Crusaders.

In the aftermath of the horrific shootings at the Al Noor Mosque and nearby Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch last March, which claimed 51 lives, the name of the country’s champion rugby team, taken from the historical crusades of the middle ages, became a lightning rod for the raw emotion the attacks unleashed.

Before we tuck into the day’s activities lest look back on a huge night at Melbourne Park where Sofia Kenin became the latest major winner after hustling her way beyond Garbine Muguruza in the final of the Australian Open.

Preamble

Hello everybody and welcome to another busy Sunday Sportwatch.

We’re not going to be focussing on one specific event this afternoon, we’re going to whipping around the grounds, pausing to cast our eye on whatever happens to be worth our attention. That list of events includes:

The Sydney Sevens with both Australia’s men’s and women’s teams in action. That one is already underway and heading towards the knockout stage.

The elite men’s event in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race is about halfway done so we’ll check in there to find out how glorious the Victorian coast looks on a summer’s Sunday.

Pretty soon Australia take on India in Canberra in match three of their T20 tri-series also featuring England. India won their opening match, Australia lost theirs in a super over.

At 3pm Australia’s men take on GB in the Hockey Pro League then from 5.30pm the women’s sides complete the double-header.

Also from 3pm it’s the Australian Open men’s doubles final with unseeded locals Max Purcell and Luke Saville taking on 11th seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury.

The A-League joins in the fun around 4pm when Central Coast Mariners welcome Western Sydney Wanderers to Gosford.

Later on we’ll point you in the direction of the liveblog for the men’s singles final at the Australian Open featuring Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem.

In amongst all that we’ll catch up on the weekend’s news and look ahead to tomorrow’s Super Bowl.

As always, feel free to join in via jonathan.howcroft.casual@theguardian.com or @JPHowcroft.
