Sportwatch: Blues through to AFLW Final, Swans late surge thwarted and more – as it happened

It’s goodnight from me - thanks for following along on this exciting night of sport. Brisbane are continuing to power along in the AFL and the Sunwolves are soon to get started against the Lions in the Super Rugby. It’s been a tough week for the Japanese franchise as Bret Harris wrote about yesterday.

AFL: Bulldogs beat Swans 82 (11.16) to 65 (9.11)

A slow start cost the Swans, scoring only one goal in the first half, and a late surge wasn’t enough to save them. However they will take heart from their second half performance. The Dogs looked worried late in the game, but two goals in the final five minutes sealed the match for the home team.

The Bulldogs’ Marcus Bontempelli was pleased with the effort. “We were really comfortable with where we sat at half-time,” he said. “But we knew they were going to come back, Sydney teams always do. We’re a young team and we’re happy with our performance.”

Super Rugby: Waratahs 20-12 Crusaders

Former Crusaders player and now Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson will be pleased to take that win over his old side. While it wasn’t a convincing performance from the Waratahs by any means, they’ll be happy to take the points and bounce back from last week’s loss.

Captain Michael Hooper kept things in perspective after the match. “It’s our fifth game of the year, we’re not expected to be playing finals footy just yet,” he said. We’re doing well, we’re winning games, so I’m stoked.”

Updated

AFL: The Lions are slightly ahead of the Eagles, leading 54-47 going into half-time. Despite the Eagles building up a handy lead going into quarter time, the home team neatly chipped away during the second term to take the advantage into the second half. Keep an eye on this game, it looks like being a memorable one.

NRL: Manly 18-26 Sydney

The Manly fans who braved the deluge will be glad they did as the Sea Eagles put on a sensational second half display to significantly close the gap. The Roosters won’t be happy with that finish after a clinical first half and will be in for a tough week of training as they attempt to remedy those defensive issues that were exposed late in the game.

A special moment tonight for Lachlan Lam, son of Roosters legend Adrian, as he made his NRL debut. “To finally get a debut in front of my family and friends is really special,” he said. “I tried to ring my dad as soon as I found out I was making my debut. The timezones didn’t really work out, but it was really emotional when I finally got to tell him.”

AFL: The Swans are still behind in Melbourne, but there’s at least one good news story out of their camp tonight - young Nick Blakey kicks a goal on debut.

NRL: Harsh but probably fair call from Travis here. It’s not an ideal start to the season for the NRL - after a highly controversial off-season they would have been hoping to see a much more evenly matched competition and more teams fighting it out at the top of the ladder rather than the bottom.

AFL: There have been a few surprises across the sporting fields tonight but possibly none more so than Matt Damon going all superfan at the Dogs and Swans game.

Super Rugby: The Waratahs lead the Crusaders 15-7 at half time at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Some promising signs for the NSW side after their loss to the Brumbies in Canberra last weekend, but remember what we said earlier - never discount a New Zealand team. The Crusaders are a quality team and will no doubt come out firing after the break.

It’s not just the win the Waratahs are playing for in this game, though - earlier in the week Bret Harris detailed some changes that may be afoot in the Wallabies which will be worrying for some Waratahs incumbents.

AFL: The Bulldogs are having a field day in Melbourne, leading the Swans 44-11 at half time. It’s not a great start to the season for the Sydneysiders who will be struggling to pull themselves out of that hole in the second half and take some form into Round 2.

NRL: It’s a very tough night at the office for Manly in Brookvale, trailing the Roosters 0-22 at half-time. Add to that the pouring rain and things are looking pretty miserable for the Sea Eagles and their drenched supporters. The 2018 premiers are showing no signs of slowing down and I’d expect to see the crowd dwindle significantly in the second half.

AFL: Just when you thought this night couldn’t get any more jam packed with sport, we have the defending premiers about to take on the Lions in Brisbane. In the battle of “states who think the rest of the country is against them” I’m backing the Western Australians in this one.

If there’s not quite enough sport happening for you at the moment, catch up on this brilliant article on US gymnast Simone Biles that we ran during the week. As well as being a gravity-defying gymnastics star, she is a brave and thoughtful woman who talks in depth with Emma Brockes about her personal struggles and the trauma faced within US Gymnastics. It’s a great Saturday night read.

Super Rugby: Hurricanes 34-28 Stormers

I hate to say I told you so, but...no that’s a lie - being right is very on brand for me and I love it. In a see-sawing second half the Hurricanes stormed past the South African side (see what I did there?) to take the match.

The loss puts the Stormers position at the top of the South African conference in jeopardy with the Lions and Bulls just one point behind and yet to play this round.

NRL: Newcastle 14-16 Penrith

Following off season dramas and a forgettable Round 1 match, there was plenty of relief on the face of the Panthers players as they held off the Knights to take the win in Newcastle. The Knights will be frustrated after having three tries disallowed by the bunker after being set upstairs as tries by the on-field referee.

The Panthers have plenty to build on and will take heart from grinding out that win. “It was a tough fought win at the end of the day,” said James Moloney. “We wanted to get up here and get our season up and running. It wasn’t perfect, but there are areas to improve.”

AFL: The match between the Swans and the Bulldogs is about to get underway in Melbourne, with 19-year-old Nick Blakey set to make his AFL debut. It’s a big moment for the young lad with his parents, sister and both sets of grandparents in the stands.

AFL: Hawthorn beat Adelaide 12.15 (87) to 7.13 (55)

It was a tough night out for the Crows, losing two players to injury during the match. Tom Doedee has a suspected ACL rupture, while the extent of the injury to Richard Douglas is not yet confirmed. It wasn’t a perfect performance from the Hawks, but they will be happy to take the win out of Round 1.

Super Rugby: Hurricanes are behind 15-21 against the Stormers in Wellington going into half time. However you never want to underestimate a New Zealand team, so expect the Hurricanes to come out hard after the break.

Back on AFLW, do yourself a favour and take a look at the #TaylaKickChallenge on Twitter. Tayla Harris has challenged fans to post their best attempt at imitating her famous kicking action. It’s pretty inspiring to see how many people are taking it on and it’s a great way to hit back at the critics.

NRL: Newcastle 8 trail Penrith 10 at half time in Newcastle. It was a good start from the Knights, but the Panthers pulled off a miracle try a few minutes out from the hooter to take the lead at the break.

Don’t forget you can email or tweet at me if you have any questions, comments or random thoughts on sport and I’ll discuss them here on the blog.

On my radar this week has been this very interesting article from my excellent colleague Erin Delahunty on why the Australian Diamonds won’t be following New Zealand’s lead and playing a televised match against a men’s team any time soon. Considering women’s sport still struggles for significant media coverage, it doesn’t seem quite right to pull men into the spotlight in the only major code that is female dominated.

Hi everyone, hope your day in sport has been going swimmingly so far. I’m here to take you through until 10pm with all the latest happenings. If you missed the AFLW preliminary final earlier, it’s Carlton through to their first grand final with a dominant win over Fremantle.

That’s all from me for now, so thanks for your company this afternoon. It’s now time for me to hand over to Megan Maurice who will see you through the evening blockbusters.

AFL: Hawthorn 6.7 (43) head to the sheds with a slender lead over Adelaide 5.4 (34). It’s been a scrappy first half but the Hawks have capitalised getting men around the ball inside-50.

AFL: Chayce Jones has just kicked his first goal in league football, and my spellcheck is not happy at all. Couple of minutes left in the first half between Adelaide and Hawthorn and there’s less than a kick in it.

Rugby: The first of three Super Rugby matches gets underway soon with the Hurricanes hosting the Stormers. Both sides have made strong starts to the season with three wins apiece.

Sanzaar will be hoping for a blockbuster to create some good news in a competition that seems continually beset by off-field issues.

NRL: Newcastle vs. Penrith will get underway shortly in the NRL, the Knights keen to consolidate their opening round victory, the Panthers eager to get off the mark for 2019.

In advance, you could do worse than cast your eye over this heartwarming story from the other rugby league heartland, northern England.

Football: While I’m on deck I would be remiss not to plug my own work from earlier this week, a column about how goalkeepers are putting stacks of preparation into saving penalties and how that’s led to a record number of spot kicks being saved this A-League season.

AFL: So our round one winners so far are: Port Adelaide, Geelong, and Richmond, although the Tigers might have traded the four points if meant key defender Alex Rance avoided the season-ending injury he suffered on Thursday night.

AFL: Hawthorn 2.4 (16) have a narrow advantage early against Adelaide 1.2 (8) in a match featuring Hawthorn’s new “clash” guernsey, a shirt that does exactly what it says it would, and clashes. Quite how a competition that micromanages everything can continue to get this so badly wrong is beyond me.

NRL: Cronulla 20-6 Gold Coast

The Sharks did all their work in the opening 35 minutes to register their first win of the NRL season. The four tries to one victory included a brace from man of the match Sione Katoa. The Titans remain without a point after two rounds.

Racing: Kiamichi wins the Golden Slipper

Kiamichi has taken out the Golden Slipper, the world’s richest race for two-year olds, at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens.

Football: Let’s recap a little bit more overnight news and it’s not good news for Adelaide United’s Ken Ilso who has recorded a positive doping test for a metabolite of cocaine and has been provisionally suspended. United are on a poor run in the A-League and last week also announced coach Marco Kurz would not stay on beyond the end of this season.

Better news for Mary Fowler with the 16-year old forcing her way into Ante Milicic’s plans. The Matildas head to the US shortly to fine tune their World Cup preparations and Fowler is on the flight stateside.

AFL: Staying with Adelaide Oval, the Crows’ men’s side have just begun their 2019 campaign against Hawthorn at the impressive stadium. The Hawks are on the board early through Jaeger O’Meara.

AFLW: Carlton will face the winner of the second preliminary final between unbackable favourites Adelaide and outsiders Geelong. The first bounce of that contest is tomorrow afternoon at Adelaide Oval.

AFLW: Carlton 9.10 (64) defeat Fremantle 4.4 (28)

Carlton are through to the AFLW grand final after a powerful display over Fremantle. The Blues were the better side throughout and had plenty to spare despite Fremantle fighting until the final siren.

It’s the latest stage in a remarkable turnaround by coach Daniel Harford, guiding last year’s wooden spooners to the brink of a flag. That’s their fourth victory in a row and they’ve looked better with every outing. Neither Adelaide nor Geelong will relish the prospect of facing Carlton in the decider.

AFL: Melbourne 9.7 (61) lose to Port Adelaide 12.15 (87)

Not the start to the season Melbourne fans would have expected. One of the flag favourites in the lead up to the 2019 campaign, the Demons were outplayed in just about every area by a Port Adelaide side few experts had making the top eight.

Tom Rockliff had a day out, recording 44 disposals, ten marks and eight tackles, while Justin Westhoff did the damage on the scoreboard with five goals.

AFL: For Melbourne fans the offseason held so much promise but the opening round of the campaign looks set to end in disappointment. Still, it’s nice to have the footy back, isn’t it? Tuck into the thoughts of two of my favourite writers - Craig Little and Geoff Lemon - as the phoney wars make way for more serious business.

Cricket: Victoria to host NSW in Sheffield Shield Final

Cricket: Victoria will host New South Wales in this season’s Sheffield Shield final after a dramatic conclusion to the home and away season. Victoria were always in pole position after losing just one match all summer but the battle to establish who would face them went down to the wire. A bold declaration and a blistering bowling performance ensured it would be NSW who make the trip to Junction Oval, pipping Western Australia after they had earlier ended Queensland’s hopes.

AFLW: Carlton can begin their grand final preparations. They have dominated Fremantle all day and take a 36 point lead into three-quarter time.

Carlton 7.8 (50) vs. 2.2 (14) Fremantle

AFL: When the official account starts to troll you know it’s not your day. Melbourne are staring down the barrel of a round one upset, trailing Port Adelaide by 21 points with just 15 minutes remaining.

NRL: Sticking with rugby league, Matt Cleary’s personal reflection on living with sporting-induced concussion from earlier this week is worth your time if you haven’t yet come across it.

After a week of MRIs and scans, a doctor pointed to some anomaly on a brain wave chart, and said: “Epilepsy.” A form of it, anyway. The doctor said he wouldn’t have known where to look if I hadn’t mentioned the cricket incident. Apparently it had lain dormant. It had taken those two knocks to bring it on. They’re the only two seizures I’ve had but it’s safe to say I haven’t played rugby or cricket, or put my head near anything fast and hard, ever since.

Updated

NRL: The first NRL fixture of the day is all one-way traffic so far with the Sharks toying with the Raiders, leading 20-0 at the interval. Cronulla ran in four tries during the opening 40 minutes, the pick of which the first of Sione Katoa’s double.

AFL: It remains nip and tuck at the MCG at three-quarter time but the Power still have their noses in front of the Demons, leading by eight points. Travis Boak and Tom Rockliff are seeing plenty of the ball while Justin Westhoff is the game’s leading goalkicker with three. This one promises to be a nail-biter.

Football: Also overnight Australia’s U23 footballers took the first step towards Tokyo 2020 with a thumping victory over Cambodia. It is a long drawn out qualifying process but Graham Arnold will be delighted with the three points and an emphatic scoreline.

Cricket: After looking long shots for this year’s World Cup just a few weeks ago Australia are suddenly looming as contenders. The momentum built overnight with another victory, this time over Pakistan in Sharjah. Australia’s rivals won’t have enjoyed seeing Aaron Finch confirm his return to form with a century.

AFLW: Carlton have one foot in the AFLW grand final after a dominant second quarter at Ikon Park.

The highlight of the quarter? Yeah, Tayla Harris again...

Updated

Tennis: The Miami Open is one of the biggest events on the circuit, a Masters 1000 tournament on the ATP Tour and a Premier Mandatory on the WTA Tour. It comes immediately after a similarly prestigious fortnight in Indian Wells and concludes the opening hardcourt quarter of the season.

In the men’s draw there’s already been a couple of shocks with last week’s winner Dominic Thiem as well as fifth seed Kei Nishikori both bowing out early. As for the Australians, Nick Kyrgios was in good form cruising past Alexander Bublik but there were defeats to Bernard Tomic and John Millman, while Alex de Minaur was a non-starter through illness. Jordan Thompson faces a tough second round contest against the seeded Karen Khachanov tomorrow.

The women’s draw had it’s share of shocks too. Top-tenners Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka are both out with a stack of lower seeds also failing to make the second week. Serena Williams required three sets to secure her progress while the star of the moment, Bianca Andreescu, continues to rack up victories despite remaining unseeded, for now.

Good news for the Aussies with Alja Tomljanović accounting for Sabalenka and making round three where she’s joined by Ash Barty and Sam Stosur, the latter meeting later this weekend guaranteeing an Australian in the last 16.

NRL: Sharks vs. Titans is underway in the first NRL action of the day. We now have confirmation that this will be one of the final games in the career of Cronulla legend Paul Gallen.

AFLW: Oh yeah, guess who kicked Carlton’s first goal?

AFLW: Quarter time in the preliminary final and Carlton hold a slender four point advantage. Both sides missed straightforward shots at goal during a frenetic opening period but the Blues looked the most dangerous in the early exchanges, getting the ball forward at speed and looking dangerous over the back of the Dockers’ defence.

AFL: Half-time in the first men’s contest of the day and one of the flag favourites Melbourne are not having things their own way against the unfancied Port Adelaide at the MCG. The Dees are trailing (6.5) 41 to Power’s (6.8) 44. Travis Boak leads all-comers on the stats sheet at the main break.

AFLW: The Carlton vs. Fremantle preliminary final is now underway. The Blues are on the board early with a couple of behinds.

Can Tayla Harris kick it? Yes, she can.

AFLW: You don’t need me to tell you the world is in a weird place at the moment, you just need to log on and stare in disbelief that the kicking action of an elite athlete is headline news requiring prime ministerial comment.

Preamble

Hello everybody and welcome to another bumper crop of sport, ripe and juicy, ready for harvesting on the latest Saturday Sportwatch. I’m Jonathan Howcroft and I’ll be with you for the afternoon shift before Megan Maurice takes over this evening. You can contribute to the day’s fun and games (i.e. prod me to let me know I’ve missed something) via Twitter - @JPHowcroft- or by email - jonathan.howcroft.freelance@theguardian.com.

So, what’s on this afternoon? Well, there’s a smorgasbord of footy, topped by the AFLW preliminary final between Carlton and Fremantle at Ikon Park. That gets underway shortly and I’ll be keeping a close eye on that throughout.

There’s a couple of AFL men’s fixtures on my watch too, including the in-progress Melbourne vs. Port Adelaide and from 4.35pm Adelaide vs. Hawthorn.

In the NRL we’ve got Cronulla vs. Gold Coast at 3pm and Newcastle vs. Penrith at 5.30pm.

I should still be around for some Super Rugby later on too with the Hurricanes hosting the Stormers at 5.30pm.

In amongst that we’ve got the Golden Slipper at 4.30pm, a meeting that may well also see the penultimate outing of the incomparable Winx.

Then there’s the final round of the Sheffield Shield home and away season, the Sydney Surf Pro, the Miami Open tennis, and plenty of overnight action to catch up on, including a thumping victory for the Olyroos.

I’m exhausted just thinking about it all. So settle back, join in and savour one of those days that makes the Australian sporting landscape the envy of the world.
