Sportscene highlights show returns to Saturday night TV as BBC confirm new slot

Scottish football fans will be able to watch highlights of their games on a Saturday night for the first time since 2002.

In previous seasons, BBC Scotland’s Sportscene show was on a Sunday evening but they are now returning to a Saturday, starting on August 1.

The news will delight football fans who have been desperate to see highlights on the night of the game for years and were frustrated at them being kept until late on a Sunday night.

Sportscene had moved to an earlier slot on a Sunday last season and that show will still be in place to cover the Premiership fixtures in more depth.

Sportscene presenter Jonathan Sutherland confirmed the news on social media when he tweeted: “Delighted to say Sportscene is returning to Saturday night telly.

“All the highlights as the SPFL season kicks off on August 1st.

“Oh, and we’re keeping the Sunday show too. Please feel free to consider the rest of today a national holiday.”

The BBC will also continue with their Championship football on a Friday night.

That show has been presented by Steven Thompson and Leanne Crichton over the last year and that is likely to continue again during the new campaign.

Thompson will also continue to be joined by Michael Stewart on Sportscene with the likes of Livingston midfielder Marvin Bartley likely to continue filling in on occasion.
