Liverpool have been named the BBC’s Team of the Year for 2020 at the Sports Personality of the Year awards.
The Reds enjoyed their most memorable campaign of their recent history as they finally won the Premier League in style, closing out the 2019/20 season with a massive 18-point lead and winning 18 of their 19 league matches at Anfield.
It brought an end to 30 years of waiting for Liverpool since their last top-flight championship, with Jurgen Klopp’s team having finished second by a single point the year previous.
They had finished second on five occasions before ending their long wait for the title this year – though even the finishing stretch of the season was further delayed when all sport was postponed through the national lockdown.
The title-winners have picked up where they left off this season and are four points clear at the top of the Premier League heading into Christmas.
In another triumphant moment for Liverpool, Klopp was named SPOTY Coach of the Year on Sunday, while club captain Jordan Henderson – who won the Premier League’s Player of the Season award in 2019/20 – was nominated for the main SPOTY prize.
That award went to Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, however, following a season in which he matched Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world titles.
