Sports Ministry approves high jumper Tejaswin Shankar's continental tour participation in Europe

NEW DELHI: The Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) of the Sports Ministry has granted approval for financial assistance to Commonwealth Games medallist Tejaswin Shankar. The assistance is intended to support his participation in continental tour events in Europe.

Tejaswin plans to compete in Belgium's high jump Gala Elmos, categorized as a D event, followed by the International Athletic Meet, Hvezdy Nehvizdy in the Czech Republic, classified as a B event.

Participating in these Continental Tour events is crucial for Tejaswin as he aims to accrue significant ranking points. This strategy is designed to enhance his world rankings, ultimately aiding his qualification for the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.

Tejaswin, who secured the high jump bronze at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and a decathlon silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games, is making a return to high jump with the goal of qualifying for the Olympic Games.

Currently training at Kansas State College in the USA under the Target Olympics Podium Scheme (TOPS) funding, he will be heading to Belgium and the Czech Republic later this month.

The financial support provided under the TOPS funding will cover various expenses, including airfare, boarding/lodging, local transport, and other necessary costs for Tejaswin's participation in these crucial events.
