Sports Minister Shane Ross wants entire scandal-hit FAI board replaced

Sports Minister Shane Ross has insisted he wants the entire board of the scandal-hit FAI replaced.

He reiterated his opposition to two members being kept on an interim basis to help with the transition to a new regime.

Mr Ross told The Sunday Times: “I have consistently maintained the position that a completely new board, without exception, is required both to tackle previous corporate governance deficiencies and to restore public confidence.

“If there is any requirement for corporate memory, all former board members will be expected to be available to assist the
new board as needed.”

The Governance Review Group, set up by the FAI and Sport Ireland, last week delivered a 78-point plan to turn around the organisation’s fortunes.

Among the changes recommended are new board and council structures, new financial controls, term limits for board members and a move towards greater gender equality.

The FAI has been embroiled in controversy since March, when former chief executive John Delaney left the organisation over a €100,000 loan he made to it.

Paul Cooke, a chartered accountant appointed to an FAI sub-committee overseeing investigations into its finances, is backing the reforms.

He said: “It will certainly bring the association on.

“It will improve at all levels –the accountability, the openness and the transparency. It’s a very significant change.”
