Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya urges people to use cycles: 6 health benefits of cycling

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday urged the youngsters of the country to use cycles as a commuting option whenever possible to remain healthy and promote a better environment. "I urge everyone, especially younger people, to use cycles to commute whenever possible. This will not only make them healthy; it will improve the overall health of our environment," he told news agency PTI.

The minister led Fit India Movement's flagship programme, Sundays on Cycle, from the Gateway of India with more than 500 cyclists constituting wellness experts, various cycle clubs and fitness enthusiasts from across the country.

The message of this week's Sundays on Cycle was #FightObesity.

Cycling is a highly effective and fun way of exercising that is packed with benefits for the body and mind. Whether cycled outdoors or on a stationary bicycle indoors, cycling can make a huge difference in overall well-being. From strengthening cardiovascular health to sharpening mental focus, daily cycling can be a life-altering experience towards a healthier way of life.

Cycling improves heart health

Cycling is a good cardiovascular exercise that makes the heart stronger, circulates blood well, and protects against heart disease. Cycling normalizes blood pressure, lowers harmful cholesterol (LDL), and raises healthy cholesterol (HDL). Frequent cycling keeps the heart powerful and enhances endurance to make everyday tasks easier.

Cycling helps in weight loss

Cycling is a fantastic way to burn calories and shed excess fat. A moderate cycling session can burn between 300–600 calories per hour, depending on intensity and body weight. It boosts metabolism, promoting efficient fat burning even after the ride is over. When combined with a balanced diet, cycling can be a powerful tool for sustainable weight loss.

Cycling strengthens joints

As opposed to high-impact activities like running, cycling is a low-impact exercise that targets leg muscles without stressing the joints excessively. It works the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and glutes but also works core muscles for stability. This makes it an excellent choice of exercise for individuals with arthritis or joint pain since it ensures mobility and flexibility.

It sharpens mental health

Cycling has profound benefits for mental well-being. It stimulates the release of endorphins, also known as "happy hormones," which reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Outdoor cycling allows riders to connect with nature, breathe fresh air, and escape daily stressors. Even indoor cycling can provide a sense of achievement and mental clarity, boosting overall mood.

Cycling improves lung capacity

Cycling increases lung capacity and enhances respiratory efficiency. As you ride, your lungs work harder to supply oxygen to your muscles, strengthening them over time. This leads to better endurance, allowing individuals to perform physical activities with less fatigue and greater stamina.
