Sports Journalism Awards: worthy winners?

Last night's Sports Journalism Awards saw Martin Samuel of The Times achieve a stunning hat-trick as he was judged sports writer of the year for the third year running.

The sports writer award is the ultimate accolade, drawn from the shortlists of all the other categories.

Samuel won out against the Independent's James Lawton, the Daily Mail's Paul Hayward, the Guardian's investigative sports journalist David Conn, Times columnist Simon Barnes, and Daily Mirror columnist Oliver Holt.

Barnes - whose cerebral musings often seem to end up in Private Eye's Pseuds Corner - and Holt shared the prize for sports columnist but the others went unrewarded.

The other hat-trick of the night was scored by Sky Sports' Jeff Stelling, who won broadcaster of the year for the third time for his dazzlingly dexterous handling of Sky's Saturday football coverage.

Other notable winners included the Times pair Matthew Syed and Neil Harman, feature writer and news reporter of the year respectively, and the Sunday Times' Paul Kimmage, interviewer of the year.

Personally, I was sad to see the brilliant David Conn overlooked for the sports reporter gong, while I am a great admirer of Michael Atherton's columns in the Sunday Telegraph. Without wishing to sound partisan, I also would have loved to see Paul Kelso's Guardian column Digger triumph in the diary category - but then again the Daily Mail's Charlie Sale is a worthy winner.

In the broadcasting category, it's hard to begrudge the inspired Stelling, but Adrian Chiles would have been a good winner too - he has brought an original wit and charm to Match of the Day 2. And it would have been nice to see Jim Rosenthal - highly respected as a great professional in the business - get some recognition now that he is leaving ITV Sport.
