Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes drafting Haskins is still possible for the Jags

The draft is under a month away and anticipation for Jacksonville Jaguars fans is increasing by the day. Of course, the reason for that is because the team could go in a variety of directions with the No. 7 overall pick, whether that is landing a top tier tight end like T.J. Hockenson, a hard-nosed offensive lineman like Jonah Williams or a defensive lineman like Rashan Gary.

There are also some who haven’t ruled out the possibility of the Jags still taking a quarterback like Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. According to him, the team did a lot of work on this year’s crop of quarterbacks and could be lurking for the right opportunity to jump on Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins if he slips.

But I’d keep an eye on the idea that they could go offensive line or—gasp!—quarterback in the Top 10 (check out our latest mock draft which has five QBs off the board in Round 1). A tackle like Jawaan Taylor (Florida) or Andre Dillard (Washington State) or Jonah Williams could be in play. And if maybe Haskins slips, I’m not saying the Jags will pull the trigger. I am saying they did a ton of work on this year’s quarterbacks going back to the fall, and could be lying in the weeds on one.

If the Jags do manage to land the young quarterback, their plan to get Foles and use him to keep the league off their trail is a genius one. Of course, their interest and acquisition of the veteran wouldn’t just be to fool the league, but he’d be a great quarterback for Haskins to watch for two years and learn from. This is something general manager Dave Caldwell said he wish he had done for Blake Bortles, who was thrown in the fire a little early.

In the end, if Foles plays at a high level throughout the process, it would make for a great problem to have, because as fans have witnessed in the past, teams would be more than willing to contact the Jags to concoct a deal for either talent. Still, I think they’ve honed in on taking an offensive lineman or tight end in round-one, but double dipping at the most important position in football certainly wouldn’t be a waste.
