Sports grounds to return to 100% capacity from this Friday

Sports grounds will return to 100% capacity in Ireland from this Friday after the government's revised reopening plan was published on Tuesday afternoon.

It will be the first time in 18 months that fans will be allowed to fill all the seats at stadiums throughout the country.

After initially restricting sporting events to behind closed doors, there has been a gradual easing of restrictions in recent months.

Earlier this month over 25,000 Irish supporters attended the friendly match against Qatar, with the Aviva Stadium operating at 50% of its capacity limit.

But now the visit of Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal to Dublin on November 11 for a World Cup qualifier is likely to be a 50,000 sell-out.

The first large-scale stadium fixture to have no restrictions will be the clash between provincial rivals Connacht and Ulster at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

And there is also likely to be huge demand for tickets for Ireland's November internationals on the first three Saturdays of November.

Andy Farrell's side will take on Japan (Nov 6) before meeting the All Blacks (Nov 13) and finally Argentina (Nov 21).

In the League of Ireland, this Friday’s FAI Cup semi-finals will see their capacities double.

5,000 people, both home and away supporters, can now see St Patrick’s Athletic host Dundalk in Richmond Park, while 3,500 will be allowed into Dalymount Park to see Bohemians take on Waterford.

This will build up nicely to the final on November 28 at the Aviva Stadium where a bumper crowd is now expected.

Elsewhere, it is a huge boost for racecourses throughout the country as the jump racing season begins to take flight.
