Sports fans forced to fork out £30 to watch events on Now TV

Sports fans settling down to celebrate the start of the Premier League season this weekend may find they need to install extra technology if they wish to continue to watch their teams on TV after this month. Now TV - which has attracted customers with its £25-a-month deal to watch the Premier League, has announced it will be turning off the streaming facility for certain older smart televisions early next month.

Customers who use early smart TVs with inbuilt internet access, manufactured by Samsung, will need to order a £30 fire TV stick, which plugs into the side of the television and streams using wi-fi, to have access from early September.

However, the streaming service is sending promotion codes by email to existing subscribers to enable them to get the fire stick free until November 2. The gadget can be ordered through Amazon at no cost by tapping in the emailed code.

Now says some TVs will no longer be 'technically supported', so they need the upgraded software connection from a fire stick. Access to its channels will stop after next month if you don't get a Fire Stick, although Now allows viewers to cancel their subscription at any time.

The news has not gone down well with some customers, who complained to @NowHelpTeam on Twitter. @F9_Films said: "so from the 5th September the Now TV app will stop working on my Samsung TV. Can you send me a Now TV box so I can continue my subscription, or do I just cancel it? while @kieronjprice76 said: "Just been notified that your no longer supporting my Samsung TV. What recommendations do you suggest to continue watching Now on my TV. Can’t really afford a new TV just to watch NOW."
