Sports events and school's spring concert cancelled by North Lanarkshire Council

Sports events, school trips and concerts have been cancelled by North Lanarkshire Council in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

A spring concert organised by NLC’s Schools Music Group is the latest casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Concerts at the Civic Centre are also set to be axed due to mass gatherings of over 500 people being suspended.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: “A decision has been made to cancel the North Lanarkshire Council Schools Music Group’s Spring Concert on Thursday, March 19, at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

“This follows the latest advice from the Scottish Government in relation to COVID-19 (coronavirus) and mass gathering events expected to attract attendances of over 500 people.

“Although events of this size do not have a significant impact on the spread of coronavirus, they could put an unnecessary burden on the emergency services, council or voluntary sector that support them.

“Understandably pupils will be disappointed as they have worked extremely hard on this project throughout the year but we continue to follow advice from government and public health in this fast-moving situation.

“All parents, carers and pupils have been informed.”
