Sports event for children with disabilities coming to Linwood

An event to encourage more young people with disabilities to try sport is being held in Linwood next month.

The Scottish Disability Sport 12th West of Scotland Parasport Festival is being held at the ON-X.

It is designed to encourage P5 to S6 pupils from mainstream schools with a physical, visual or hearing impairment, to try a variety of new and exciting sports.

Nine sports are on offer including badminton, boccia, powerchair football, wheelchair basketball, athletics, judo, football, swimming, table tennis, and tennis.

Representatives from local clubs will be at the event to run the sport sessions and encourage young people to get involved.

A spokesperson for Scottish Disability Sport said: “It has been identified that these individuals are significantly under-represented when it comes to participating in weekly sport or physical activity.

“The activities selected reflect the strong club structure in the region. The key impact of the event is to provide a multi-sport opportunity to these pupils, identify talented individuals within specific sports, alongside channelling pupils onto local, regional club programmes and sessions.

“We would like to welcome back all pupils who have attended in the past, alongside engaging new pupils to attend for their first experience.”

Powerchair footbal at the last games in Linwood (unknown)

The last event took place in March 2020 before lockdown at the ON-X for the first time. The event moved from a previous location in Ravenscraig to offer youngsters the chance to try swimming as well.

The festival is a partnership event between Scottish Disability Sport, Active Schools, West Disability Sport Branches (Ayrshire, Dumfries & Galloway, Glasgow and South Lanarkshire), Scottish Governing Bodies of Sport along with local community club coaches.

It will take place on Thursday, March 3 at the On-X sports centre in Linwood.
