Sports Direct swoop for Brixton Market falls through

pic from property brochure

An audacious swoop by Mike Ashley-led Sports Direct to buy Brixton Market has collapsed, it emerged on Friday.

In November the retailer was understood to be the front-runner to snap up Brixton Village and Market Row, which are home to 140 retailers and restaurants.

That £30 million deal would have been made through a Sports Direct vehicle, rather than by chief executive Ashley personally.

However, a spokesman for GCW — one of the selling agents for vendor London & Associated Properties —told property magazine EG: “The previous party did not comply with the agreed timescales.”

The market is now under offer to another unnamed party.

Last year’s talks came after a firm linked to Sports Direct bought land nearby earlier in 2017.

A source said Ashley’s strategy could echo that of Teddy Sagi, who has snapped up swathes of Camden to bring its markets under one ownership.

Sports Direct was not available to comment today.
