Sports Direct concession on top floor of Bristol Debenhams to close down

A major sports shop in Bristol city centre is closing down.

The Sports Direct concession on the top floor of Debenhams will close in February.

A spokesperson for the retail giant, which is headed up by billionaire Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley, said "closure of the Sports Direct concession hasn’t been confirmed as of yet".

However, a Bristol Live reporter visited the Broadmead store this afternoon (January 9) and found signs stating otherwise.

A sign greets customers as they arrive at the top floor which reads: "This concession will be closing in February 2020.

"Please shop at our nearest store: 13/15 Broadmead, Bristol, BS1 3HF."

The Sports Direct spokesperson added that "there will be no job losses if it (the closure) does happen," adding "We have multiple locations across the city and would relocate all staff in this instance".

All stock in the store has been reduced in price ahead of the closure.

Retail Gazette reported in 2017 that Sports Direct had shut down almost half of its Debenhams concessions as part of its strategy to become "the Selfridges of sport".

In July 2019 The Guardian reported how shares in the retail group fell nearly 10 per cent to 238p last year, as analysts suggested the company was struggling to cope with a string of acquisitions made in the past 18 months.

Earlier this week Debenhams confirmed that 19 stores across the country will close between January 11 and 25.

The store in Broadmead is not included in the list but a further 28 shops are expected to shut next year.

A spokesperson for Debenhams said: "Sports Direct has served notice for this concession and it will close next month.

"We don’t have any current information on plans to replace this offer."
