KOLKATA: In a unique collaboration, the British High Commission and the Calcutta Sports Journalist Club (CSJC) came out with a sports table calendar at a ceremony at the CSJC tent in Calcutta on Monday.
The event was graced by the presence of Deputy High Commissioner of Great Britain Christiana Scott, British Deputy High Commissioner Nick Lowe and Prabir Roy Chowdhury, advisor to the club. Olympian table tennis player from Bengal Poulami Ghatak was also present on the occasion.
Pictures clicked by some eminent sports journalists from Kolkata who have travelled across the world covering various sporting events found place in this handy calendar. All the pictures showcased events being held in the UK over the years.
Ms Scott, on her first visit to the city, was overwhelmed by the presence of a galaxy of sports journalists of the city. She spoke about the historic relationship between UK and India and how that has grown stronger and stronger over the years.
“The UK has a global sporting reputation – one that’s underpinned by the presence of several huge sports brands and an unrivalled experience of delivering global sporting events. It’s also the leading European SportsTech market equipped with some of the world’s leading venture capital and investment funds, an array of leading academic and sporting institutions, and innovative and creative companies,” she said.
Lowe felt that there cannot be a better bridge than sports between different countries and people.
“Whether it’s England, India and Wales contesting the Hockey World Cup in Odisha, Cheteshwar Pujara scoring runs in England and Jos Buttler scoring runs in India, or Manchester United’s recent roadshow in Kolkata, sport unites us. It builds bridges between people. And it’s been at the heart of the living bridge between our two great countries since the nineteenth century. Those ties are stronger than ever and they are what we celebrate in our UK/India Greal Sports Calendar,” he said.
